Meet one of our clients’ favorite vintage singer and Pro member – The Vintage Singer – Jess. She has generated more than £8 000 and cultivated 32 bookings through Poptop.  Jess has shared with us her singer career story, thoughts on music entertainment business and a key to successful communication with clients. Read her interview below and get inspired to conquer the event business!

How long have you been in the business and how did you start?

I have been singing from an early age and I have been in the business for about 15 years now. I have always been in love with music, however, it took me a few years to feel confident enough to make the big jump and try to be a full-time vocalist. Now it’s 5 years that music is my full-time job.

What are the main challenges for you in event business?

As a vocalist the challenges are many. First of all, London, where I am based since 2011, is a highly competitive environment hosting extraordinary artists. To be on the top of the game you have to constantly renew yourself and improve your offer. Also being free-lance means each month can be unpredictable. Nevertheless, I would not change my choice. Working hard pays back.

What are the most important questions to ask a potential client?

The most important thing with a client is to understand what kind of atmosphere they wish to create through music. I have a very extensive repertoire ranging from the ‘20s to today’s music. So what I need to know beforehand is the client’s preference: background jazzy –  vibe or up – and – dance rock&roll night? Or anything else in between? Having many years of experience, I can read the crowd quite well so I often decide which tunes to sing on the night (or day) of the gig to best suit the guests.

Why did you choose this music genre?

I specialise in “vintage music” as I have always had a big passion for the music of the past and the style of the ‘40s; the ‘50s and ‘60s, therefore, I decided to mix the sound of those beautiful eras with the costumes & accessories (including my beloved Super 55 Deluxe microphone) for an immersive retro – musical experience.

What is your key to success at Poptop?

The key is transparency and being responsive. Good recordings, videos, and pictures are a must for every musical act and indeed clear prices.

Do you have any favourite event booked via Poptop?

I had many bookings via Poptop and I loved performing for each and everyone of them  🙂

What personal advice would you give to someone who wants to succeed in music entertainment career?

Be resilient, keep developing new skills, network with fellow musicians and have fun in the process!
