Everything was very quick and efficient to book and organise the event. Simon was very good at communicating and liaising between ourselves before and up to the event. The show was really good and everyone seemed to enjoy it very much.

"Super happy with Wayne. :-) The venue we provided was a farmers field with a fire pit (so less than ideal) and he just got on with his set and did what I was hoping he would which was make the 200 strong crowd laugh :-) :-) Another point worth noting for event organisers is that Wayne stayed true to the quote on his profile page unlike EVERYONE else who quoted up to 3 times the price in some cases. Thanks Wayne, you did good and added a nice touch to our event. Simon W."

"It was a great evening both performances turned up on time and were welcomed by our staff. The first act Lorna Shaw only related to a few attendees with in the room due to the act she performed, however the piece she left until the end which was a song caught the attention of the audience and everyone has been talking about it since. The second act Tony Coward smashed it with his performance he had every one howling with laughter with his one liners. Thank you so much for sorting this out for me Kind Regards Balvinder Rana"

We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies

We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.

Hiring a Comedian in the UK: The Buyer’s Guide That Actually Helps

If you want a room full of people paying attention, laughing in the right places and talking about your event for weeks, a great comedian is hard to beat. Whether you are dressing a marquee for a rural wedding, transforming a community centre for a charity night, or adding a surprise set to a club night, booking stand up is simpler than you think. We have guided thousands of clients through it, so below we lay out how to choose the right act, what to expect on the night, how to brief them, and how to keep your planning quick, calm and cost effective.

What counts as a “comedian” for events

Comedians for private and corporate events cover more than straight stand up. You will see:

  • Stand up comics with a polished club set
  • Comedy hosts and MCs who run the night, introduce speakers and handle awards
  • Improv troupes who take suggestions from your crowd and build scenes
  • Character or musical comedians for something theatrical or cabaret styled
  • Roast specialists for milestone birthdays or company leavers, always within agreed boundaries

The right choice depends on your audience, the shape of the evening and how brave you feel. If you want mainstream laughs for a mixed crowd, a clean stand up act or a charismatic MC will cover most bases. If your guests are up for something interactive, improv or gentle roast segments can be unforgettable.

Where comedians work best

We routinely place comedians in village halls, barns and marquees, hotel suites, club spaces and community centres. Comedy is portable and the tech rider is usually minimal. Give them a microphone, a reliable PA and a simple lighting wash, then position the audience close enough to feel connected. A low stage is helpful in a marquee or barn, especially when sightlines are long. In village halls and community centres, seat rows forward and keep the bar closed during the set to limit chat at the back. In hotels, ask to kill background music, refrigerated display hums and air con noise during performance windows.

Event types that suit live comedy

  • Rural weddings that want a surprise set between courses or just after the meal
  • Seasonal parties where a 20 to 30 minute routine kicks off the dancing
  • Club nights that need a hosted opener, a game segment, then a quick reset to DJ
  • Fundraisers in community centres, often two comedians and an MC
  • Company awards in hotel ballrooms where a calm host keeps the night on time

The pattern is simple. Use comedy to gather attention, create a shared moment and hand over to the next element with energy.

How long should a set be

For mixed audiences, we recommend one of these shapes:

  • 20 to 30 minutes for weddings and seasonal parties
  • 2 x 20 minutes for club nights or charity shows with a break for drinks
  • 45 minutes for a dedicated comedy evening with seated guests
  • Hosting across two to three hours if you want an MC to thread the whole night

Shorter sets keep energy high and avoid fatigue, especially in rooms where people have been chatting or drinking. If you want more time, split it into sections. Your comedian will help you find the rhythm.

What style fits your crowd

Most private bookings call for flexible mainstream comedy. That means quick gags, light crowd work and observational material that lands with a wide range of ages. If you need family friendly, say so at the start. Many comics carry a PG version of their set and are happy to avoid blue material, swearing or sensitive topics. Equally, if it is a club night for adults, you can loosen the reins a little and the comic will pitch it accordingly. The key is a clear brief, which we will come to next.

The perfect brief in five minutes

You do not need to write a novel. Give the comedian the essentials:

  • Who is in the room, rough age mix, any children present
  • What the event is celebrating, any running order constraints
  • A short note on the host or VIPs, correct pronunciations, any no go areas
  • What tone you want, family friendly, safe office humour, clubby after 10 pm
  • Tech set up on site, hand held mic or headset, speakers, lighting, stage position

This lets the comedian plan material, adjust crowd work and avoid awkward moments. When you book with us, we collect this in a simple form, share it clearly, and confirm back in writing so everyone knows what is expected.

Sound and light, the realistic version

Comedians carry very little gear. Many just need a hand held microphone, a PA with a single channel and a stand. In barns and marquees, speakers should point at the audience and be placed ahead of any open microphones to avoid feedback. Soft white wash on the performance area helps facial expressions carry. Kill fairy lights behind the performer or pull a backdrop, since backlighting can silhouette the face. If you are already hiring a DJ, their system is usually fine for speech level volume. Agree who controls the music so the walk on and walk off moments feel slick.

Pricing you can comfortably plan for

Most private bookings land between £300 and £1,200 in the UK. Smaller charity nights and village halls sit toward the lower end, headliners or bespoke hosting run higher. Travel time and late night finishes can add cost, as can extra sets or extended hosting. What we do to help is show instant, all inclusive pricing so you do not wait around for quotes. Once you enter your date, guest count and postcode, you see exactly what fits your budget, with no surprises later.

How we help you pick with confidence

We know your time is precious, and we want you to feel relaxed and informed. Here is what you can expect from us, in plain terms:

  • Enjoy a truly friendly attitude. You are not just booking a slot. You are working with professionals who care about the room, read the crowd and treat your guests kindly. That warmth is the difference between polite smiles and true belly laughs.
  • Plan your party in minutes. We show instant pricing, availability and package details, then our team answers questions quickly so you can lock things in without a long email chase.
  • Get an event that is uniquely yours. Need a PG set for a family crowd, or a cheekier tone after 10 pm, or specific jokes about the birthday star within safe limits. We help the act tailor it, so the result feels personal and spot on.
  • Relax and plan without anxiety. We keep you in the loop at each step, share confirmations and arrival times, and make sure the running order is agreed. No guesswork, no last minute flaps.
  • Find what you need effortlessly. Enter the basics and you will see a curated range of comedians ready for your date and location. No sifting through endless irrelevant listings.
  • Discover everything in one place. If you also need a DJ, a mobile bar, sound hire, or a photo booth, you can bundle that in the same marketplace. One login, one plan, one happy organiser.
  • Host a party that will be remembered. Live comedy is a premium touch that people talk about. We specialise in those touches, so your event stands out in the nicest way.
  • Book with confidence and complete security. We vet our suppliers, help you choose sensibly, and guarantee support if something goes off script. Your money is protected, and your booking is safe.

Running order that works in real rooms

Put the comedy where attention is easiest to win. At weddings, that is after the meal, before the first dance, with seated guests and drinks refreshed. At seasonal parties, start early in the evening while people are still attentive, then hand to the DJ. At club nights, open with a hosted segment to establish the tone, then return for short bits between music blocks. Always ask the venue to pause service and reduce clatter during the set, then bring service back immediately after, which keeps the team happy and the laughs audible.

Crowd work, roasts and safe boundaries

A good comedian can play with the room while keeping it welcoming. If you are open to roast style jokes for a birthday or leaving do, share a few stories and red lines in advance. The best bits are affectionate and specific, not cruel or controversial. For workplace events, set a clear expectation of inclusive humour. We help you capture those boundaries so the act lands big without risking HR emails on Monday.

How to set the room

  • Seat guests closer to the front than you think, with a clear stage area
  • Place late arrivals at the back, so they do not walk through the spotlight
  • Keep the bar closed for the duration of the set, usually 20 to 30 minutes
  • Provide a chair on stage for improv or character bits if requested
  • If using a barn or marquee, add carpet or matting near the stage to deaden echo

These little details make a big difference to punchline clarity and the feeling of a shared moment.

What happens on the day

Your act will arrive in good time, check the mic and PA, and run a short sound test. They will meet you or the duty manager, confirm running order, then hold until the room is ready. You introduce them, or they self intro, and the set runs to the agreed duration. After the final applause, they hand to you or the DJ and usually stay for a quick photo if you want one. Payment and receipts are already sorted through the platform, which keeps things simple for you and your accounts team.

How to shortlist quickly and well

Start with the tone you want, then choose by experience level and budget. Watch or read recent reviews, check set length options, and confirm tech requirements. Look for notes that match your venue type, for example, marquee friendly, community centre regular, hotel awards specialist. Choose one or two acts you love, then add a backup in case timings move. We will hold availability, confirm details and keep you posted at each step.

Why comedians thrive in rural and small town venues

Village halls and barns give comedy a natural intimacy. People sit closer, distractions are fewer and the atmosphere is warm. Seasonal parties and rural weddings get extra value, because a set breaks up the evening and gives non dancers something to enjoy before the music starts. With minimal tech, quick setup and short performance windows, you can add high impact entertainment without turning the event into a theatre production.

The confident next step

We keep the whole thing straightforward. Enter the basics and you will see comedians who fit your location, venue type and budget, complete with instant pricing and clear package info. Tell us the tone you want, PG or mainstream or late night, and we will help tailor the set so it suits your people. You will have confirmations, reminders and support from first click to final applause, and you will know you are protected by a secure booking process.

Ready to hear laughter at your event

If you are planning a village hall fundraiser, a barn wedding, a seasonal party in a hotel suite or a late set at a club night, we can get you a comedian who feels made for your crowd. We will help you choose quickly, keep stress low and make sure the details are right. Share your date, guest count and postcode, and let us show you instant options that work. Book with confidence, relax into the night, and enjoy the sound every organiser wants to hear, a room full of happy guests.

What equipment is required to hire a comedian for a party?
The main equipment required to hire a comedian for a party is a microphone. Other requirements include a performance space, usually 2m x 2m, or just somewhere the comedian can stand for people to see him or her. However, some comedians require a stage performance that is 10x8 feet. Some perform while intermingling with the guests. There are some comedians whose performances involve theatrics. If you want to hire such comedians, you should make provisions for a changing area as well. The time needed for setup is usually between 20 minutes to an hour.
