We couldn’t have been more impressed with Emily and her piano skills for our ceremony and reception drinks. She was absolutely perfect throughout start to finish. I requested for a new song that wasn’t on her music list to be played as my walk down the aisle song and she played it perfectly. She really did set the mood and tone for our wedding from the start. Thank you so much Emily for playing a key part of our special day. We are so so glad we found you to be part of our day making it wonderful.

Dan played at our wedding this week which included him playing whilst guests arrived at church, the processional piece, hymns, through the signing of the register and the recessional piece. Everything Dan played was to perfection and at the highest level - exactly how we imagined and with the same emotion and natural flare / talent shared by the original composers. Dan was extremely accommodating and was able to learn new and complex compositions from scratch - all at a very reasonable price. We would definitely recommend Dan and will look to use him again if the chance arises. 5 stars! Thanks again Dan.

Neil was absolutely brilliant when we booked him to perform for our friend’s hen weekend. He put on the most amazing entertainment for us and got involved to create the best atmosphere for a brilliant party. His singing is excellent and his music choices were fab. He was also so kind and courteous when we were coordinating the evening, super helpful and quick to keep in touch. Book Neil, you will not regret it! Thank you Neil for such a fantastic evening!

We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies

We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.

The Ultimate UK Guide to Finding Your Perfect Pianist

The UK is home to an incredible pool of musical talent, which is fantastic news. Your perfect pianist is out there, and finding them is all about matching their style to your vision. Think of it as curating the perfect soundtrack for your day.

Setting the Tone: A Symphony of Styles

Before you dive in, have a think about the overall feel you’re going for. This will guide your choice of musical style and help you find a pianist with the right repertoire.

  • Timeless Classical: For those events that call for a touch of grandeur and tradition, classical piano is the ultimate choice. It’s perfect for formal weddings in stately homes, prestigious awards ceremonies, and sophisticated corporate galas. The intricate melodies of composers like Chopin, Bach, or Debussy create an atmosphere of pure elegance and refinement, lending a real sense of occasion to any event.

  • Cool Jazz & Swing: If you’re aiming for a more relaxed yet sophisticated vibe, a jazz pianist is a superb option. Perfect for cocktail parties, networking events, and stylish private parties, jazz creates a cool, smooth atmosphere that encourages mingling and conversation. From classic swing to mellow modern jazz, it adds a touch of timeless cool to any gathering.

  • Modern Pop & Acoustic Covers: This is a huge crowd-pleaser and a brilliant way to add a contemporary, personal touch to your event. Imagine hearing stunning instrumental versions of your favourite songs, whether it’s from iconic British bands like The Beatles and Queen or current chart-toppers like Harry Styles and Dua Lipa. Guests love the surprise of recognising a familiar tune, and it’s a fantastic way to make your event feel fresh, modern, and fun. It's a perfect choice for weddings and private parties.

Most pianists have extensive song lists on their Poptop profiles, so you can get a great idea of their repertoire. Always check out their video and audio demos to hear their style for yourself.

Nationwide Know-How: The Practical Side of Planning

Organising the logistics for a pianist is pretty straightforward, no matter where you are in the UK. Here’s what you need to consider.

First up, the instrument. The big question is always: does the venue have a piano? Many of the UK’s hotels, event halls, and dedicated wedding venues will have an acoustic piano on site. If they do, it's worth checking with the venue manager that it’s in good condition and tuned regularly.

If your venue doesn’t have a piano, or if you’re hiring a more unique space like a barn, a gallery, or a marquee, do not worry. This is incredibly common, and every professional pianist will have their own high-quality, portable digital piano. These instruments are brilliant. They look sleek, sound fantastic, and can be set up quickly in almost any location. All your pianist will need from you is information about access (any tricky stairs or long distances from the car park?), a suitable space to set up, and access to a power socket.

First and foremost, I absolutely love what I do! Although I was classically trained, I felt hemmed in and as though ‘fun music’ was a bad thing. In my late teens I realised it’s not all about following the rules, but more about getting in and making a grab right at the soul of the music! Once I started to do this, the reaction I got told me I was onto something.

About supplier

Originally schooled at both the RNCM in Manchester and the University of Leeds. However, it’s the playing for pure pleasure that makes me tick today. Like I mentioned before, it’s about getting right into the soul of the music, not fussing about technical intricacies or ascending 6ths!

Next, think about sound. For smaller gatherings of up to 60 or 70 people in a standard-sized room, a pianist often won’t need any amplification. The natural sound of their instrument will be perfect. For larger crowds, bigger venues, or spaces with tricky acoustics (like stone-walled halls or venues with very high ceilings), a small PA system is a good idea. This ensures the music is distributed evenly and at a comfortable volume for all your guests. Most pianists can provide their own compact PA system, so just have a quick chat with them about your venue and guest numbers.

Finally, let’s talk about timing. How long do you need the pianist to play for? A typical booking is usually for two or three hours, which is perfect for covering a drinks reception and a meal. This is normally broken down into sets, such as three 45-minute sets with 15-minute breaks. It’s always a good idea to share your event’s schedule with the pianist so they can time their performance to perfectly complement the different parts of your celebration.

The Financials: Budgeting for a Pianist in the UK

So, what’s the damage? Hiring a professional pianist is one of the most cost-effective ways to add a huge amount of value and sophistication to your event. As a general guide for the UK, you can expect to budget somewhere in the region of £80 to £200.

The final price will depend on a few key factors:

  • The pianist’s experience: A highly experienced, in-demand concert pianist will naturally have a higher fee than a talented musician who is earlier in their career.
  • The length of the performance: A one-hour booking will cost less than a four-hour booking.
  • The date and time: A Saturday evening in June is prime time for events, so it will be at the higher end of the price scale compared to a weekday afternoon.
  • Travel: While many pianists are happy to travel, significant distances may incur an additional travel fee. This will always be included in your instant quote on Poptop.
  • Special requests: If you ask the pianist to learn a new piece of music just for you, there might be a small extra charge to cover their time.

The great thing about booking on Poptop is that all our quotes are all-inclusive, so you’ll never have any hidden surprises.

My Golden Rules for Hiring a Pianist (Anywhere in the UK)

Before you jump in, here are a few final words of wisdom to ensure everything goes perfectly.

  • Audition them virtually: The best way to know if a pianist is right for you is to hear them play. Spend a few minutes watching the videos on their Poptop profile to get a feel for their talent and style.
  • Become the musical curator: Don’t be afraid to share your vision. A great pianist will love to hear about your 'must-play' songs and any tracks you’d rather avoid.
  • Settle the sartorial situation: It’s a small detail, but confirming the dress code with your pianist helps them blend in seamlessly with the style of your event.
  • The guest request dilemma: Have a think about whether you’re happy for guests to make requests on the day. It’s always best to discuss this with your pianist beforehand.
  • The final pre-show rundown: A week before your event, a quick email or call to the pianist to confirm the final arrangements for timings and setup is always a good idea.

Right, Let's Get This Show on the Road

And there you have it. A live pianist is a wonderfully versatile, elegant, and surprisingly affordable way to add a touch of magic to your event, no matter where you are in the UK. You’re now fully equipped with all the info you need to find the perfect musician for your celebration. The perfect soundtrack to your event is just a few clicks away. Happy planning!
