Oscar and Barney were amazing! We booked really last minute after another band cancelled and they were really flexible and managed to fit in with exactly what we were looking for. We booked them for my friends hen do and requested Irish songs and they were brilliant - even playing songs for us that weren't on their usual set list. They were super friendly and relaxed and I think everyone would have liked them to stay all night if they could! Would highly recommend.

Shenanigans wasn't our first choice for the surprise party but we're very glad we managed to secure them. Alan and Steve provided just the sort of music and feel good factor we were looking for. Lots and lots of our guests complimented us on their musicianship and sound. They say that good things come in small packages and Shenanigans certainly does. They were excellent value for money and if we do another surprise party this time they would be first-choice.

Behan’s Footsteps came to play at my husband’s 60th birthday party, they were absolutely fantastic and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing good music at their event. They responded very quickly to my queries and requests and were an absolute pleasure to deal with, we would hire them again if we have another ‘do’

We had a Glastonbury-like home garden festival with family and friends. We booked Shenanigans for some live entertainment in the early evening - the description of simple Irish folk music with plenty of audience participation attracted us. They were great from point of contact to their performance. Very talented, good range of Irish folk songs and great audience engagement. Made a great weekend even more enjoyable!
We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies
We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.

Where an Irish band shines in Manchester
Irish music works brilliantly when you want energy, warmth and a shared moment. In Manchester we see consistent success across:
University balls that need a fast way to get hundreds of students moving together.
Irish Festival events in March where the atmosphere is already charged and the room wants classics alongside a few modern surprises.
Tech and company socials that start with background music and finish with a packed dance floor.
Lively weddings that call for acoustic romance in the afternoon and high-energy ceilidh after the cake.
City birthdays where you want conversation early on, then a proper singalong finale.
If your guest list spans ages and tastes, an Irish band is a clever glue. It creates instant camaraderie, even if half the room has never stepped a ceilidh in their life.
Styles and lineups that fit Manchester spaces
Most Manchester venues reward bands who are adaptable and tidy on stage. The good news is Irish lineups are built for flexibility.
Acoustic reception turning to dance. A trio with guitar, fiddle and bodhrán or cajón keeps things light during drinks, then leans into upbeat numbers later. Perfect for hotel suites or brewery mezzanines.
High-energy ceilidh with caller. Three to five musicians plus a caller who teaches and leads. Ideal for student unions and converted mills where you’ve got room to form sets.
Indie-folk mashups. Four or five piece outfits that blend trad with Manchester-friendly indie and pop. Fiddle hooks on familiar choruses are a genuine crowd leveller.
Ceremony and spotlight moments. Instrumental duos and trios for aisle walks, first dances and short showcases during awards.

Lineup sizes vary from compact trios to punchy five piece bands. A quartet is the sweet spot for most briefs. It covers acoustic intros, ceilidh blocks and modern covers without overloading a modest stage.
What it costs to hire an Irish band in Manchester
Expect professional bands to sit between £750 and £1,400 in Greater Manchester. Where your quote lands depends on:
Number of musicians. Trios are leaner, five piece bands push higher.
Playing time. Two sets of 45 to 60 minutes is standard. Extra sets or late finishes add cost.
Caller requirement. Adding a caller for ceilidh sections is a specialised skill and affects price.
Date and demand. March festival nights, key summer Saturdays and December dates go early.
Tech package. Some bands bring full PA and basic lighting. Others tie into house systems.
Logistics. Load-in constraints, city centre parking and split setups can nudge the fee.
On Poptop you see all-inclusive prices up front. No waiting for quotes. If you tweak the brief, you see the change in seconds, not days.
Planning for Manchester venues and spaces
A bit of venue-specific thinking pays off. Here is how to match the band to the room.
Converted mills and warehouses. High ceilings and hard surfaces create natural reverb. Bands who know these rooms manage dynamics so tunes stay punchy without turning boomy. A caller will choose dances that suit long, open floors.
Breweries. The charm is real, the acoustics can be lively. A trio or quartet with tidy monitors and a controlled drum setup keeps clarity over the buzz of the bar.
Hotel suites. These demand polish and precise timings. Expect a neat stage plot, cable runs kept out of sight and a volume plan that works for dinner, speeches and late dancing.
Student unions. Two priorities here. First, a caller who can wrangle a big crowd with humour. Second, a band that carries presence without needing a stadium-sized rig.
Outdoor courtyards and marquee annexes. Stabilise flooring for percussion, plan simple uplighting and keep an eye on sound limits if you’re near residential streets.
Share access routes, lifts and parking details early. It keeps setup smooth and protects your timelines.
Ceilidh 101 for Manchester hosts
Never booked a ceilidh. No problem. Here is how it runs when done well.
The caller explains each dance in plain language and walks everyone through the moves.
Dances last 5 to 8 minutes. The band paces the set so confidence builds as the night unfolds.
You do not need previous experience. In fact, beginners bring the best energy.
For big rooms, the caller picks patterns that avoid bottlenecks. For smaller spaces, they choose compact sets that still feel communal.
A single ceilidh block is often enough to hook the entire room. By the second block, even the shy guests are in.
Ceilidh is pure social engineering. It gets colleagues mingling, families laughing and strangers acting like old friends.
Crafting the right set list for a Manc crowd
A strong Irish band will blend tradition and familiarity to suit the room. Think:
Reels, jigs and favourites that even first-timers recognise within a few bars.
Indie and pop reworks, from 90s anthems to singable current hits, arranged for fiddle, guitar and tight harmonies.
Acoustic covers for ceremonies and spotlight moments, including the occasional stripped-back love song.
Manchester-flavoured nods. Not cheesy, just a wink that lifts the room together.
Tell the band your must-plays and any no-go songs. They will tailor around your crowd, not force a fixed playlist.
Example running orders that work
A clean running order keeps your event flowing. Use these as starting points and we’ll tailor to your timings.
University balls
Arrival hour with upbeat acoustic tunes to set the mood.
Short welcome from the committee, then a 20 minute ceilidh taster to break the ice.
Awards and photos, backed by instrumental underscoring.
Full dance set with caller, then a final indie-folk mashup to close.
Irish Festival events in March
Open with trad standards to anchor the theme.
Ceilidh block 1 while energy peaks early.
Short breather with modern acoustic covers.
Ceilidh block 2 and a pop-leaning finale to keep non-trad fans engaged.
Tech and company socials
Background instrumentals during networking and food.
Icebreaker dance led by the caller, 10 to 15 minutes maximum.
Playlist music while teams chat, then a 50 minute set that builds to singalongs.
Optional DJ takeover for the late slot.
Lively weddings
Ceremony performance by a duo or trio.
Drinks reception with acoustic trad and gentle covers.
Dinner and speeches, then the first dance played live if you wish.
Two evening sets with a ceilidh block in the middle to unite the generations.
City birthdays
Curated list based on the guest of honour’s favourites.
One ceilidh block if space allows, or stick to indie-folk mashups for a tight dance floor.
End with a familiar chorus everyone can belt together.
Technical and sound notes that save headaches
Manchester venues often have clear rules on volume and finish times. A prepared band will ask for:
Power. Two standard sockets near the stage. If power is distant, allow time for safe cable runs.
Space. Around 3 by 4 metres for a quartet. If tight, a trio keeps plenty of vibe.
Load-in windows. City centre sites sometimes restrict access. We’ll align arrival to suit.
Sound limiters. Many venues use them. Experienced bands work within limits and still deliver punch.
Shared tech. If a DJ or venue technician is involved, we’ll agree changeovers so there is no dead air.
Between sets, most bands provide playlist music. If you want a full DJ service after the live element, we can add one or coordinate with your chosen DJ.

Choosing between great Irish bands
When shortlisting, spend a few minutes on the details that matter.
Watch videos that show both acoustic reception work and full dance sets.
Look for reviews that mention your type of venue, for example mills or hotel suites.
If ceilidh is essential, prioritise bands that list a dedicated caller and talk about teaching beginners.
Check what the band provides. PA, lighting, arrival times, set lengths and public liability insurance should be clear.
Ask for a sample running order for your timings. The best bands show how they will build the night, not just what they will play.
If two options seem close, the one that communicates promptly and answers your venue questions usually proves the safer bet.
A simple roadmap from idea to dance floor
You can get from first thought to confirmed booking without fuss.

Can I ask a band to play my songs?
Our suppliers accept song requests. However, we advise that you discuss your playlist request with your preferred band during the booking process. All Irish bands always have their playlist, but they will be willing to accept your song request. In cases where your song request is not included in the playlist, a band may charge you an extra fee.
Will you play any background music between sets?
In most cases, Irish bands for hire in Manchester play background music during the break between sets so your guests can stay entertained until their next set. Bands can take between 15 to 30 minutes for a break between sets. Some bands may play songs in the background using a music player until they are ready to perform the next set, while other bands offer DJ services as part of the package. Our suppliers will be responsible for the music. However, you can contact them to inquire directly.
