A huge thankyou to Duncan. His performance was excellent, and he was so friendly and kind. He explained so much about the bagpipes, and we were all so very interested in all of the information he gave to us. My friends and I enjoyed his company very much, and I would certainly hire him again. I would rate him 5 stars +

Booked for Wedding

Robin played for our son and fiance's wedding at St. Anthony's Chapel Ruins, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. His presence and his music completed the whole ceremony. Robin is such a lovely man, very sociable and kind. He piped Evan and Lindsay up the path to the ruins, and of course, piped her in to her waiting groom as the ceremony began. Robin was very punctual arriving in plenty of time for the wedding. His hiring was very easy to arrange as he was very punctual in responding to all emails. I would highly recommend this wonderful Bagpiper, Robin Hay and would definitely hire again if we ever had another event in Edinburgh.

We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies

We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.

Why a Bagpiper Makes Your Birmingham Wedding Unforgettable

Choosing the entertainment for your wedding is a big deal. You want something that reflects you as a couple and creates the right atmosphere. A bagpiper does all that and more. It’s not just background music; it’s a full-blown experience that hits you right in the heart.

The Power and the Passion

There is no sound on earth quite like the bagpipes. It’s a sound that demands attention. It’s powerful, it’s stirring, and it’s full of a kind of wild, ancient emotion. When a piper strikes up a tune, it cuts through the noise and creates a real sense of occasion. Imagine the sound of the pipes echoing around one of Birmingham’s stunning historic venues as you walk down the aisle, or leading you and your new spouse into your reception. It’s pure drama, in the best possible way. It’s a sound that signifies a hugely important moment is happening, and it gives everyone goosebumps.

A Nod to Heritage and Tradition

For many couples, hiring a bagpiper is a wonderful way to honour their family heritage. If you or your partner have Scottish or Irish roots, including a piper in your day is a beautiful and meaningful nod to where you come from. It’s a way of weaving your family’s story into the fabric of your wedding day, connecting the past with your future. Even if you don’t have any Celtic connections, the sense of tradition and history that a bagpiper brings is universal. It adds a layer of depth and significance to the celebration.

The Ultimate ‘Wow’ Factor

Let’s be honest, you want your wedding to be memorable. You want your guests to leave saying, "Wow, what a day!". A bagpiper is a guaranteed way to achieve that. It’s unexpected, it’s spectacular, and it’s something that most guests won’t have experienced at a wedding before. From the incredible sound to the striking visual of the piper in full Highland dress, it’s a feast for the senses. In a vibrant and diverse city like Birmingham, adding a touch of this unique and powerful tradition makes for a brilliant and unforgettable contrast.

Finding Your Perfect Piper in Birmingham

Convinced? I thought you might be. Now for the fun part: planning how to incorporate a piper into your big day. A bagpiper isn’t usually booked to play for hours on end; their performance is all about making an impact at key moments.

Key Moments to Feature a Bagpiper

Here are some of the most popular and effective times to have a bagpiper play during your wedding:

  • Greeting Your Guests: Have your piper play outside the ceremony venue as your guests arrive. It’s a fantastic welcome and immediately sets a grand and exciting tone for the day.

  • Piping Down the Aisle: For a truly dramatic entrance, have the piper lead the bridal procession. A powerful, traditional tune like 'Highland Cathedral' is a classic choice and is guaranteed to be a tear-jerker.
  • During the Signing of the Register: While you’re signing the legal documents, a piper can play a couple of more gentle tunes in the background. It fills the quiet moment beautifully and keeps the atmosphere alive.
  • The Recessional: This is a moment of pure joy. Have your piper lead you and your new spouse back down the aisle as a married couple. An upbeat, celebratory tune is perfect here.
  • Entering the Reception: The ultimate announcement of your arrival as a married couple. Being piped into your wedding breakfast at your hotel or reception venue is a spectacular moment that kicks off the party in style.
  • Choosing the Right Tunes

A professional bagpiper will have a wide repertoire of tunes. Don't be afraid to have a chat with them about the kind of mood you want to create at different points in the day. They can play everything from slow, emotive airs to fast, lively jigs and reels.

Traditional tunes like 'Scotland the Brave', 'Amazing Grace', and 'Mairi's Wedding' are always popular choices. However, many modern pipers are also incredibly versatile and can play contemporary songs. If you have a favourite pop song, it's worth asking if they can play a version of it. It can be a really fun and personal touch.

    The Look: Tartan and Tradition

A huge part of the appeal of hiring a bagpiper is the visual spectacle. A professional piper will arrive in full, traditional Highland dress, which usually includes the kilt, sporran, jacket, and hat. It’s an impressive sight and looks incredible in photos. If you have a family tartan, you can always ask if the piper is able to wear it. They may have it in their collection, or it might be possible to hire it for an additional fee. It’s a wonderful detail that adds another layer of personal meaning to their performance.

Logistics for a Bagpiper in Birmingham

Now for the practical stuff. Hiring a bagpiper is very straightforward, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind, especially when it comes to your venue.

Bagpipes are, by their very nature, loud. This is part of their magic, but it’s something to consider. They are perfectly suited to outdoor spaces, where their sound can carry beautifully without being overwhelming. If you’re getting married in one of the lovely hotels or parks around Birmingham, having a piper play outside is a fantastic option.

If your ceremony or reception is indoors, it’s crucial to check with your venue beforehand. In a large space with high ceilings, like many of Birmingham’s historic venues or grand hotel ballrooms, the sound will be magnificent. In a very small, enclosed room, it could be a bit too much for your guests' ears. A quick chat with your venue coordinator is all it takes to make sure it's a suitable choice. Your piper will also have plenty of experience and can advise on the best place to position themselves for the perfect acoustic effect.

The Cost of a Piper in Birmingham

So, how much does this unforgettable experience cost? You’ll be pleasantly surprised. For a standard wedding package in Birmingham, the benchmark price is around £210.

This typically covers the piper’s performance at several key moments throughout your day, for example, playing for guests' arrival, piping the bride down the aisle, playing during the signing of the register, and leading the couple out of the ceremony. The price will generally include their travel within the local area and, of course, their impeccable traditional dress. If you require them to play for an extended period or have special requests like learning a new song or wearing a specific tartan, there might be an additional cost, but this will all be made clear in your quote.

Top Tips for Hiring Your Piper

Before you make your booking, here are a few final tips from me to you:

    • Listen to them play. Check out the audio and video clips on their Poptop profile. It’s the best way to get a feel for their skill and the quality of their sound.
    • Discuss your key moments. Be clear about which parts of the day you want them to play at so they can plan their performance perfectly.
    • Talk about the tartan. If you have a family tartan, it’s always worth asking if they can wear it.
    • Check with your venue. Have a quick chat with your wedding coordinator to confirm they are happy to have a bagpiper, especially for indoor performances.
    • Confirm the details. A week before the big day, drop your piper a quick message to confirm the final timings and arrangements.

    Time to Make a Statement

Hiring a bagpiper for your Birmingham wedding is a choice you won’t regret. It’s a powerful, emotional, and spectacular addition that will set your celebration apart and give you and your guests memories that will last a lifetime. It’s a touch of tradition, a dash of drama, and a whole lot of heart. Go on, make a statement.
