We booked Chilli Gold Wings for the evening of our wedding celebration. The food was amazing! The staff were lovely and friendly. They were a fun, different, and tasty addition to our special day. All of the guests absolutely loved them and there were lots of laughs about how spicy the 'hot' actually was! Thank you so much Chilli Gold Wings! We would definitely recommend them.

Ibukun from Chilli Gold was hot on communication from the initial booking, and provided EXCELLENT food and incredibly friendly service. They were super flexible to our dietary requirements, set up without needing any power to the van, and added a really special touch to our charity's Christmas Party. Everybody was raving about the wings, especially the maple ones! Thank you so much - couldn't recommend Chilli Gold more!

A Taste of Africa in the Capital: Your Ultimate Guide to Hiring African Caterers in London

London is a proper melting pot of cultures, and nowhere is that more obvious than in its incredible food scene. While you can find just about any cuisine under the sun here, we’ve noticed a huge rise in requests for something a bit more vibrant, flavourful, and exciting for events. Enter the magnificent world of African catering.

Forget beige buffets and predictable canapés. We’re talking about food that tells a story, sparks conversations, and gets your guests genuinely excited. From the smoky, spicy grills of West Africa to the fragrant, slow-cooked tagines of the North, hiring an African caterer is a guaranteed way to make your London event truly memorable.

But where do you start? The continent is vast, the cuisines are diverse, and you want to get it just right. Don’t you worry. We’re here to walk you through everything you need to know, making the process as smooth as a perfectly blended egusi soup.

Why Go African for Your Next Event?

Choosing a menu is one of the biggest decisions in event planning. It sets the tone and is often the thing people remember most (for better or for worse!). Opting for African cuisine is a brilliant move because it’s:

  • Exciting and Different: It offers a refreshing change from the usual event fare. It shows thought, creativity, and a touch of adventure.
  • Incredibly Diverse: There's a flavour profile for every palate. Whether your guests love fiery spice, rich and savoury stews, or delicate, aromatic dishes, there’s an African cuisine to match.
  • A Fantastic Icebreaker: The food itself becomes a talking point. Guests will mingle, share, and bond over trying new dishes and discovering new favourites.

A Culinary Road Trip Across the Continent

Thinking "African food" is a bit like thinking "European food" – it’s a massive category with incredible regional variety. Let's break down some of the most popular catering options you'll find in London.

West African Wonders

This is often the gateway for many people, and for good reason! It’s all about bold flavours, rich sauces, and a healthy dose of spice.

  • Jollof Rice: We have to start here. This iconic one-pot rice dish, cooked in a delicious tomato and pepper base, is a non-negotiable centrepiece. Just don't get us started on the Ghana vs. Nigeria debate; let's just agree that all jollof is glorious.
  • Suya Stations: Imagine this: a chef grilling thinly sliced, spice-dusted beef or chicken skewers right in front of your guests. The aroma alone is a showstopper. Suya is perfect for more informal, interactive events.

  • Small Chops & Canapés: Think puff-puff (lightly sweetened dough balls), savoury meat pies, and mosa (plantain fritters). These are perfect for standing receptions and work brilliantly as starters.
  • North African Delights

Travel north and the flavour profile shifts to aromatic spices, sweet and savoury combinations, and beautifully tender meats.

    • Tagines: These slow-cooked stews are the heart and soul of Moroccan and North African cuisine. Whether it’s lamb with apricot and almonds or chicken with preserved lemons and olives, a tagine is a sophisticated and deeply satisfying choice.
    • Couscous & Salads: Fluffy, expertly prepared couscous is the perfect accompaniment, often served with grilled vegetables and flavourful salads bursting with herbs, pomegranate seeds, and citrusy dressings.

    East African Feasts

Catering from regions like Ethiopia and Eritrea offers a unique and wonderfully communal dining experience.

    • Injera Platters: The star of the show is injera, a spongy, slightly sour flatbread that doubles as your plate and cutlery. Large platters are topped with a variety of flavourful stews (known as 'wats'), including lentils, meats, and vegetables. It's designed for sharing and is a fantastic way to bring guests together.

The Perfect Menu for Every Occasion

African catering is wonderfully versatile and can be tailored to suit any kind of London gathering, from a slick corporate do to a massive wedding bash.

    • Weddings: Go for the wow factor with a magnificent pan-African feast. Imagine sharing platters of East African injera to start, followed by a buffet featuring a jollof station, a classic Moroccan tagine, and plenty of grilled meats and vibrant salads. It’s a celebration on a plate.
    • Corporate Receptions: Impress your clients in the City with something beyond the standard vol-au-vents. Elegant, African-inspired canapés are a brilliant choice. Think mini suya skewers, plantain cups with spiced shrimp, or delicate pastries with North African fillings. A live cooking station always goes down a treat in a contemporary warehouse space or on a stylish roof terrace.
    • Milestone Birthdays & Parties: This is where you can have some real fun. A relaxed, buffet-style service with mountains of jollof rice, fried chicken, plantain, and various stews allows guests to dive in and enjoy. It’s festive, informal, and absolutely delicious – perfect for a town hall or ballroom celebration.
    • Cultural Nights: If you’re hosting an event in a museum or gallery, a menu that reflects the theme is a sophisticated touch. A curated selection of dishes from across the continent can beautifully complement the art and atmosphere.

Let's Talk Money: Budgeting for Your Booking

So, how much does it all cost? It’s often more affordable than you might think for the quality and experience you receive.

Generally, you can expect prices for African catering in London to range from £18 to £40 per person.

Most caterers will also have a minimum spend, which is typically between £900 and £2,000. This ensures they can cover their costs for smaller, more intimate events. The final price will depend on a few things: your guest count, the complexity of your chosen menu, and the style of service (e.g., buffet, canapés, or live cooking stations).
