Oscar and Barney were amazing! We booked really last minute after another band cancelled and they were really flexible and managed to fit in with exactly what we were looking for. We booked them for my friends hen do and requested Irish songs and they were brilliant - even playing songs for us that weren't on their usual set list. They were super friendly and relaxed and I think everyone would have liked them to stay all night if they could! Would highly recommend.

Great from initial enquiry to performing their set. Really good communication and very friendly guys, my Dad loved it for his birthday, as did the 30 other guests. Highly recommend.

We had the band at our son's wedding and they were great. They got everybody going and David's instructions were very good and very funny, too. Hardly anyone knew how to dance these dances, so chaos ensued in the most entertaining way. By the last song we finally got it and they kept playing for 15 minutes (!) because everyone was most enthusiastically participating. These guys are wonderful musicians and entertainers. Thank you so very much!

Genuinely the best band and the best choice for our wedding day! We had a massive Ceilidh which was super fun! The band went above and beyond, setting up at the venue before guests arrived and sorting out all of our sound needs throughout the reception. Before the day, Karl had been really helpful and clearly communicated everything to us, and on the day everything ran so smoothly. Many of our guests said how talented the band was and how it was the best Ceilidh they’d been to. I highly recommend that you book them for your event!!

I booked Blag to provide the entertainment at my Retirement Ceilidh last Saturday and they were absolutely tremendous.
With their fiddle player acting as caller, they guided a novice crowd of dancers through a series of well known Ceildh dances and ensured that everyone had fun, providing us with a night we will remember for a long long time.
Thank you.

Phil really was incredible! He gave a group of 16 girls a barn dance lesson as part of a hen part. We all absolutely loved the session, especially the bride to be!
Phil was extremely responsive the whole way through and was very accommodating with keeping it a surprise!
I would highly recommend Phil, he is really talented and fantastic entertainment!
We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies
We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.
Barn Dance Band Hire In Manchester: The Straight-Talking Guide
Thinking about a barn dance band in Manchester? Good shout. Few things get a mixed crowd moving faster than a caller on the mic, a fiddle leading the charge, and sets that even your most rhythm-shy mates can master. Whether you’re throwing an office shindig in a mill, a student night at the union, or a winter knees-up with tinsel and twirls, Manchester is made for this kind of party. We’ll walk you through how it all works, what it costs in the city, and how to pull off a “Madchester Ceilidh” that feels both northern and new.
What A Barn Dance Band Actually Does
A proper barn dance band brings two superpowers. First, toe-tapping live folk music with a steady beat that keeps the floor moving. Second, a caller who teaches each dance in simple steps, then guides the room as you go. No experience needed. You’ll hear reels, jigs, circles, squares, all delivered at a friendly pace so everyone can join in quickly.
Manchester adds its own flavour. Many local bands are happy to slip an indie-folk twist into the set so it feels a touch more Warehouse Project than village hall. Think the energy of a city-warehouse hoedown with the warmth of a countryside ceilidh.
Perfect Manchester Occasions
Office Shindigs
You want quick wins, low faff, and maximum team bonding. A caller-led first set gets strangers laughing in five minutes flat. Follow with a lighter second set and you’ve got the perfect alternative to the standard DJ-only do.
Student Nights
Ceilidh steps are easy after two minutes of teaching, which makes them brilliant for bringing societies together or kicking off a freshers’ calendar. Bands can scale sound systems to unions and campus halls, and the format naturally breaks the ice.
Festivals
Pop-up ceilidh tent? Lovely. A roaming duo for daytime, then a full band with caller for the evening slot. Expect high-energy group dances that pull in passers-by without needing a 90-minute soundcheck.
Weddings
A ceilidh fills floors at every age. Run a lively post-meal set to mix the families, then add a short encore later in the night. Bands can also play a gentle acoustic interlude for photos or room turns.
Christmas Parties
Swap the gimmicks for cosy, high-spirited dancing. A festive swing to the setlist, maybe a seasonal waltz, and you’ve reinvented the office Christmas party without a novelty jumper in sight.
Where It Works Best In Manchester
Industrial mills and lofts suit the look perfectly. Exposed brick, tall ceilings, polished concrete. The sound loves that airy space, and the dance lines look brilliant against those long walls.

Curated suppliers
All Poptop’s suppliers are rigorously vetted and approved by our team of party experts, ensuring you book the very best.
Breweries bring relaxed, sociable vibes, often with the bonus of great house drinks and built-in staging.
University unions are built for crowds and give you easy access, power and late finishes.
If you fancy the classic field-to-floor feel, barns just outside the ring road give you those rustic backdrops with shorter travel times for city guests.
Logistics to think about:
Noise limiters are common in renovated mills. Ask the band if they carry limiter-friendly kit and a direct input setup.
Access and load-in paths matter. A four-piece with PA needs time and a trolley, not a lift-less fifth floor and a locked fire door.
Power is simple. Two separate 13A sockets near the stage area will cover most lineups.
Floor space is a bigger factor than you’d think. You want a clear rectangle with room for long sets. Move tables back after dinner and you’re golden.
The “Madchester Ceilidh” Theme
If you want something with a Manchester heartbeat, go for a Madchester Ceilidh. Keep the core dances people love, then ask the band to sprinkle indie-folk flavours between sets. A guitar tone with a bit more shimmer, a snare that nods to indie backbeat, a cheeky tune tease that your guests recognise before the caller counts you in. Dress the space with warm festoon, vintage gig-poster style signage, and a denim-and-boots dress code. You get northern character without losing ceilidh charm.
What It Costs In Manchester
Typical price for a quality barn dance band with caller in the city is £900 to £1,800. Where you’ll land depends on:
Lineup size and reputation. A tight trio with caller sits lower in the range, a four or five-piece with well-known players sits higher.
Duration. Two 45-minute sets with caller and breaks is common. Add an extra set and the fee rises.
Travel and late finishes. City centre timings are fine. Longer travel to barns outside the ring road or a 1 am finish will add a bit.
Extras. Early setup, playlist music between sets, or a small acoustic duo for arrivals can nudge the price.
What’s usually included:
Professional caller
Full PA suitable for your headcount
Basic lighting for the performance area
Arrival, setup, two or three sets, and recorded music in breaks if requested
How To Plan Your City-Warehouse Hoedown
Eight to twelve weeks out:
Confirm date, headcount estimate, and venue restrictions such as sound limiters and curfew.
Decide on lineup size. Trio or quartet with caller covers most events. Larger rooms and festival vibes benefit from a five-piece.
Choose your theme notes. Classic ceilidh, Madchester Ceilidh, or a gentle indie-folk twist.
Four to six weeks out:
Firm up timings. Ideal is a lively first set after speeches or food, then a second set once the room is refreshed.
Share the room layout. Bands can plan where to position the caller and how to shape the lines.
Lock in access, parking, and load-in routes. If the venue has a goods lift, book it.
One to two weeks out:
Send the running order to your band and MC. Include any shout-outs or special moments.
Confirm break music. A band-provided playlist is easiest. If you want your own, send a phone with a short, tidy playlist.
Plan lighting that flatters the floor. Warm, not clinical. Guests dance more when the room looks inviting.
On the day:
Keep a clear rectangle for the first dance line. The caller will set it up in minutes.
Encourage a first-tune pile-in. If two or three confident people jump in first, the rest will follow.
Offer water jugs at the edge of the floor. It sounds basic. It works wonders.
Choosing The Right Lineup
A caller is non-negotiable. After that, a fiddle plus guitar or accordion forms the core sound. Add flute or whistles for lift, percussion for drive, and a bass or piano for body. In Manchester lofts and breweries, a quartet balances fullness with footprint. If you want the indie-folk flavour, ask for a guitar approach that leans modern rather than strictly trad. The caller keeps it accessible while the band colours the edges.
Sound, Space, And Practicalities
Space needed:
Performance area roughly three by four metres for a quartet with PA
Dance floor width that allows two long lines. If you can move tables after food, do
Sound tips:
Limiters reward disciplined volume. A direct-in approach with careful monitoring beats battling the limiter all night
Put the caller where they can see the dancers. A raised step or low platform helps
Logistics:
Reserve one parking spot near the entrance
If your barn is outside the ring road, share exact sat nav codes and a what-three-words style marker if available
Curfew and building neighbours. Keep an eye on finish times in mixed-use mill complexes
What They’ll Play
Expect a friendly mix of reels, jigs, circles and squares. The caller will start with something ultra simple so the whole room wins early, then build to swisher figures once confidence kicks in. For a Manchester twist, some bands drop familiar melodic nods between dances. Nothing novelty. Just enough sparkle for your guests to grin and say “wait, is that…” before the next call comes in.
