Just to say that although Katya originally accepted my booking she had doubled booked, but went over and beyond to find me a replacement, so if nothing else can be completely trusted. Thank you Katya, the replacement did a fantastic job and our evening was extremely memorable!

The very best of the best. Jenny is the most professional yet down to earth woman. From start to finish I cannot even begin to thank her for making our big day as incredible as it was. The music during our ceremony in London started the day to then her coming back to our reception and just blowing everyone away. She is so dedicated and incredibly talented you’d be mad to not snap her up. Hands down my favourite part of the day! Thank you a million times Jenny.

Vikki was excellent, my only regret in booking her is that I wasn't able to physically be more present to enjoy her playing after the ceremony, as I was dragged off for photos (I was the groom, hah). She was accomodating, professional, and her playing was beautiful. I cannot recommend her highly enough. Thank you, Vikki! -Bryn & Jules

Naomi performed at my mothers funeral and was lovely to deal with throughout. She listened to all our thoughts and help put them together in a stunning and very moving performance on the day. Everyone thought she was superb. I would recommend her 100%.

Susan was a pleasure to work with, she was professional, friendly and most importantly a beautiful harpist. I could not recommend her enough. We had nothing but positive feedback regarding her performance, she really adds a special touch to any event. Would highly recommend.

Hiring a Cellist in Manchester: The Smart, Stylish Choice

Manchester does live music differently. The city’s indie heritage, converted mills and canalside spaces set the tone for events that feel contemporary yet warm. A cellist fits right in. Whether you’re planning a civil ceremony, a media wrap party, a gala dinner, a hotel lounge set or an upscale birthday, a cello brings chic character, rich tone and a surprising amount of range. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what works best in Manchester venues, how to brief your player, what it costs, and how to book with confidence.

Why a Cellist Works So Well Here

A cello delivers depth without overwhelming the room. It suits warehouse spaces with natural reverb, intimate Northern Quarter lofts, sleek city hotels and canalside venues where you want atmosphere without cranking a full PA. It’s also incredibly flexible. Your cellist can glide from ambient background to indie and alt covers, then switch into neo soul instrumentals as the night builds. One instrument, lots of moods, minimal footprint.

The Manchester Sound Palette: Three Styles That Land

To keep your event on-brand for the city, we recommend focusing your brief on one of these defined directions. You can mix and match, although choosing a core flavour helps the set feel cohesive.

  • Indie and alt covers on cello Think familiar melodies reimagined for strings, tight rhythms, and just enough edge to feel modern. Great for wrap parties and birthdays where guests recognise hooks and chat over them. Works brilliantly in lofts and warehouses where the cello’s resonance carries.
  • Neo soul instrumentals Silky, groove-led lines with subtle harmony. Ideal for hotel lounges and gala receptions where you want polish without formality. This style pairs well with cocktails, canapés and low, warm lighting.
  • Ambient sets for receptions Textural, cinematic, and slightly airy. Perfect for civil ceremonies and arrival drinks, especially in canalside venues. The sound wraps the space and sets a calm mood while people settle in.

What It Costs In Manchester

Expect to pay between £240 and £420 for a solo cellist for a standard booking. The exact figure depends on date, travel, early arrivals, late finishes, and whether you want ceremony plus reception. Electric cello, looping, or bespoke arrangements can add marginal cost, but still sit comfortably inside or just above that range.

Planning For Specific Event Types

Matching set shape to event format makes everything feel intentional. Here’s how we guide clients across the most common Manchester briefs.

Civil ceremonies

  • Prelude: 15 to 20 minutes of ambient sets for receptions while guests take their seats. Keep it calm and cohesive.
  • Processional: Choose a single indie and alt covers on cello piece or a classic arranged simply. Aim for 60 to 90 seconds, with a neat cadence at the front.
  • Signing: Two short neo soul instrumentals, gentle and unintrusive.
  • Recessional: Something brighter from the indie and alt covers list to lift the room.
  • Tip: If your aisle is long in a warehouse space, ask the cellist to plan vamps so we can extend gracefully without awkward repeats.

Media wrap parties

  • Arrival window: Ambient sets for receptions while the room fills, then shift into indie and alt covers on cello as the energy lifts.
  • Short highlights slot: A 15 minute focus set timed around speeches or a screening.
  • After-speeches: Neo soul instrumentals that sit under conversation and content capture.
  • Tip: Electric cello with a compact amp helps if you’re balancing walk-through interviews and background buzz.

Gala dinners

  • Reception: Elegant ambient sets for receptions in the foyer or bar.
  • Dinner: Two 30 minute sets of neo soul instrumentals between courses, keeping levels low and steady.
  • Coffee and networking: A gentle indie and alt covers on cello finale to signal the shift from dining to mingling.
  • Tip: Ask for a decibel ceiling. A good player will work with your planner and venue manager to keep it consistent.

Hotel lounges

  • Early evening: Neo soul instrumentals that stay classy yet warm.
  • Peak hour: Add select indie and alt covers on cello to increase familiarity without changing the vibe.
  • Tip: Spaces with marble floors can bounce sound. A rug under the cellist and careful placement takes the shine off reflections.

Upscale birthdays

  • Welcome drinks: Ambient sets for receptions to set mood.
  • Cake moment: Pick a favourite melody from the indie and alt covers on cello list, kept short for photos.
  • Later on: A bolder mini set with looped lines for a subtle party lift before the DJ takes over.
  • Tip: If the party moves from canalside terrace to loft mezzanine, plan a quick reset point with your cellist to avoid gaps.

Acoustic Or Electric: Choose For The Room

  • Acoustic cello: Natural, warm, and breathtaking in reflective spaces like brick warehouses and high-ceiling lofts. Best where guests are close to the performance spot and background noise is moderate.
  • Electric cello: Sleek look, great for balancing chatter in city hotels and media events. Takes pedals and looping nicely, so your player can build textures for ambient sets for receptions or rhythmic neo soul instrumentals without a full band.

If you’re unsure, we’ll match the instrument to your venue, guest count and programme.

Repertoire That Fits Manchester Venues

When we shape a shortlist with clients, we keep the following principles front and centre:

  • Recognisable hooks early: Guests relax faster when they catch something familiar, especially with indie and alt covers on cello.
  • Texture over volume: In big brick spaces, the cello’s sustain does the heavy lifting. Fewer notes, better bloom.
  • Pulse for energy: Neo soul instrumentals deliver a soft groove that keeps conversation humming without stealing focus.
  • A clear through-line: If you want a journey, start with ambient sets for receptions, move to indie familiarity, close with a soulful glide.

Tech And Setup: Keep It Simple, Keep It Smart

  • Space: A two by two metre footprint is usually enough, plus a chair and music stand.
  • Power: Only required for electric cello, looping or a small amp. One standard socket will do.
  • Lighting: Warm, even light helps guests see the instrument and photographs beautifully.
  • Weather cover: For canalside terraces, plan shade or a canopy. String instruments and direct sun are not friends.
  • PA or no PA: Solo cello rarely needs a full PA. If you have speeches, we’ll coordinate so the player’s level sits comfortably under the mic.

Logistics That Prevent Stress

  • Load-in: Warehouses and lofts can involve stairs and side doors. We’ll confirm access and timings so your cellist isn’t hauling gear through guest areas.
  • Soundcheck: Ten minutes is plenty for a level check, especially for ambient sets for receptions where subtlety is key.
  • Turnarounds: If you’re moving from ceremony room to reception area, plan a five minute buffer for the cellist to relocate and reset.
  • Insurance and safety: Professional cellists carry public liability insurance and maintain their kit to a high standard. We verify this during booking.

How To Brief Your Cellist Like A Pro

Give the essentials and a little inspiration. You’ll get a better performance that still feels effortless.

  • Event plan: Date, address, guest numbers, and the rough timeline.
  • Venue type: Warehouse space, Northern Quarter loft, city hotel or canalside venue. The room shapes choices.
  • Core theme: Pick one primary direction, for example indie and alt covers on cello. Add a secondary, like neo soul instrumentals, for variety.
  • Do-plays and no-plays: A handful of must-have tunes and any styles to avoid.
  • Ceremony cues: Names, aisle length, where to pause, where to finish.
  • Dress code: Smart, black tie, or creative. It’s Manchester, both work.
  • Special moments: Cake, speeches, photo ops. We’ll sync music to the beats.

A Sample Flow For A Manchester Civil Ceremony

  • Guests arrive: 15 minutes of ambient sets for receptions to settle the room.
  • Processional: A tailored indie and alt covers on cello arrangement that lands neatly at the front.
  • Signing: Two short neo soul instrumentals at low level.
  • Recessional: A brighter melody from the indie list to lift the space.
  • Drinks by the canal: Shift outdoors for another 20 minutes of ambient sets for receptions while photos happen.

This structure keeps movement smooth and the mood consistent from first arrival to the first glass.

How Many Sets Do You Need

For most bookings, two 30 to 40 minute sets cover a reception or dinner beautifully. Civil ceremonies often need 45 to 60 minutes total including prelude, cues and a short post-ceremony window. For wrap parties and hotel lounges, plan 90 to 120 minutes across the evening, broken into manageable sections.

Lead Times And Availability

Manchester gets busy around spring and autumn for weddings and corporate events. For Friday and Saturday bookings, we recommend locking in your cellist 8 to 12 weeks ahead if possible. For weekday hotel lounges and wrap parties, four weeks is often enough. If you’re short on time, we’ll still find options, confirm pricing instantly, and sort the details quickly.
