IMPORTANT NOTICE: OUR COVID-19 POLICY IS CLIENT-FRIENDLY!
I sincerely wish that you are safe and well during this pandemic. Our policy is to prioritise the health concerns of clients, audiences and performers alike and strictly follow government directives. Upon booking, we will issue you a clear plan of how we can perform at your outside venue, socially-distanced and under a photogenic cover that we will provide ourselves. Additionally, in these uncertain times, our clients have enhanced licence to cancel without financial jeopardy to encourage them to plan ahead.
So why- even outside the pandemic- do people choose Solid Steel ahead of other steel bands?
1) The band is a long-established professional band that is professional in its organisation. Founded by the half/Trinidadian/half-British Paul Cherrie in 1986, the band’s origins are very authentic- and naming this band ‘Solid Steel’ was a real statement of professional intent.
2) The band runs an office. Professionally. Phone calls between real humans are encouraged and emails and messages of all kinds are handled promptly and efficiently. You will receive a simple contract from us that will leave you in no doubt that the bespoke services you wanted to book and what we are providing are one and the same.
3) Musically we excel with a long reputation for only hiring the very best professional steel pan musicians to perform for you. We are not an amateur community band of players who are only really capable of sounding good playing in a band of 50 and who will turn up late at your event wearing their own branded t-shirts.
4) Entertainment is our business. We don’t only play well, but we sing well too- if required. For 99% of steel bands this is not an option. But also we smile, we laugh, we wear good costumes, we interact with the audience- and we enjoy ourselves! In our experience this is the best way- if needed- to encourage an audience to enjoy itself too!
5) Our prices are competitive. Despite this being our full-time job, we are not necessarily more expensive than other bands and will generally be able to match their quotes if fairly challenged to do so.

We play the most beautifully tuned steel band instruments to the professional level required of full-time musicians on any instrument. Most often we play as a trio, instrumentally and ‘unplugged’, and go for tunes that are strong melodically. Our band has the history and passion to play traditional Caribbean songs authentically, and the progressive approach that embraces all genres of popular music where great melodies can be found.
All of our musicians play a second instrument at a professional level. This enables us to deliver varying formats offering vocals and other instrumentation.
Most traditional steel bands principally play ‘Caribbean Folk’ music consisting of calypso and Harry Belafonte ‘island music’- along with some old Latin-American ‘standards’. We really enjoy playing these wonderful melodies but also meet the modern demand by playing pop and reggae, including professional-standard vocals.
When required to be fully-instrumental and unplugged, the melodies we play are long and strong and our traditional Caribbean music fits the bill perfectly.
Solid Steel has performed around 200 different songs over the years, but below is a list of the ones most recently played.
Please feel free to make a few requests before your event.
We can provide bespoke playlists, if required, but please bear in mind that we normally only get to play 25-30 songs and are really experienced in determining the music best suited for a particular audience.

Please, describe your act or business in on sentence:
I'm a professional singer and steel pan/drum player with over 30 years of experience in performing- mostly as bandleader of the UK's leading professional steel band 'Solid Steel'- and managing other Caribbean, African and Latin American acts. :)
What are the highlights of your career?
Playing on stage with the Rolling Stones at 19. Being the first steel band to play on TV's 'The Generation Game'- if you're old enough to remember that show. :) Playing at private parties for Paul McCartney & the Beckhams. Recording & miming 'Under The Sea' in 2017 for a production at the eye-wateringly expensive wedding of Shipping heir Filippos Lemos attended by royal figures from across Europe and the Middle East (2 kings, 4 queens, 6 crown princes and princesses, lol) Numerous appearances on daytime tv- if you check my Youtube channel by searching 'Cherry Ripe Management' 2019 highlights include playing for a scene in Sir Steve McQueen's forthcoming BBC production, 'Small Axe'- and then being invited to play for his 50th birthday party & performing in a scene filmed at Warner Brothers for their upcoming live action 'Tom & Jerry' movie.

What kind of events do you usually serve?
In the main, private functions of which the majority are wedding receptions and corporate events.

By card or by BACS
How long do you play for?
For as long as you’d like us- or at least for as long as your budget will allow. ;)
