Booked for Other Event

I wanted live music at the funeral of my twin brother who was a talented pianist when he was younger and loved classical music. We knew which songs he loved, but I wanted a more personal feel to the service and a brass band seemed fitting, particularly as we are from Yorkshire. The whole experience of organising the event with Chapel Brass was straightforward and they were hugely sensitive and supportive at this terrible time for me and my family. We zoomed and emailed to confirm all details and they appeared at the church on the day with no fuss and played exquisitely. The funeral was very well attended and everyone commented on how brilliant and moving they were and what an original idea it was. I couldn't recommend them highly enough. J Brook.

Hire a Brass Band in Leeds: The Buyer’s Guide

Leeds loves live music. From summer fairs and graduation balls to weddings and gala dinners, a brass band brings a spark that a playlist can’t replicate. If you’re planning an event in Leeds and want the energy of real horns, a big rhythm section, and sing-along tunes, this guide walks you through everything. We’ll cover styles that work locally, where bands shine, how much to budget, and how to book with confidence. We’ll also show how we at Poptop make the whole thing quick, simple, and stress-free.

Why a Brass Band Fits Leeds So Well

Leeds has a vibrant student scene and a proud Yorkshire tradition of brass. That mix gives you two clear wins. First, brass is brilliant at breaking the ice for diverse crowds, which is ideal for weddings, gala dinners, and university events. Second, the city’s spaces are made for it. Think pedestrianised streets for roaming sets, barns on the outskirts for rustic receptions, hotel ballrooms for a bit of sparkle, and brewery-style venues for a relaxed, modern feel. Wherever the party, a brass band can match the vibe.

The Core Styles to Choose in Leeds

There isn’t just one type of brass band performance. Pick the format that suits your crowd and your venue.

  • Pop-brass party: Modern chart hits, indie anthems, and guilty pleasures, reworked for brass and drums. It feels like a compact street parade at your party. Great for weddings that want dancing from the first note, or for evening receptions at hotels and barns where guests will gather around the band.
  • Festival-warm-up brass: Think feel-good grooves and sing-backs, perfect for outdoor summer fairs and university events. Sets are upbeat, with walk-on crowd engagement and tunes everyone knows. Ideal for pedestrianised streets, market spaces, and marquees at community festivals.
  • Funky roaming horn section: A mobile line-up that moves through your guests. Sax, trumpets, trombone, and a drum strapped on. It’s interactive and playful, brilliant at turning arrival drinks into a mini-festival. Works beautifully at breweries, courtyards, and large hotel foyers where you want the music to come to the people.

What Leeds Hosts Book for Each Event Type

  • Weddings: Ceremony entrance on a soulful brass ballad, confetti exit to an upbeat tune, drinks reception roaming set, and a high-energy first dance medley. Brass is an instant mood lift and photographs well.
  • Graduation balls: A roaming warm-up while guests arrive, then a stage set to kick off the dance floor. Brass versions of chart hits keep it cross-generational.

Curated suppliers

All Poptop’s suppliers are rigorously vetted and approved by our team of party experts, ensuring you book the very best.

  • Gala dinners: Background swing and soul during dinner, followed by a punchy 45-minute show to transition into the awards or after-party. Bands can scale up with extra horns for a grander sound in hotel ballrooms.
  • Food markets and street events: Short roaming bursts across the site. Bands draw footfall, create atmosphere for traders, and keep families staying longer.
  • Summer fairs: Family-friendly, upbeat sets on a small stage or gazebo. The sound carries well outdoors and keeps the programme lively between announcements.
  • Leeds Venues and Spaces That Suit Brass

    • Hotels: Best for evening stage sets and formal receptions. Power and load-in are simple. Opt for a 5 to 7 piece with PA support.
    • University venues: Large foyers and halls are perfect for either roaming sets or a focal stage performance. Plan a soundcheck before the crowd arrives.
    • Barns: Rustic settings love the warm, organic tone of brass. If the barn is off-grid, check power for PA and lighting. Acoustic or semi-acoustic sets can work for drinks, then amplified for dancing.
    • Breweries and industrial spaces: Concrete floors and high ceilings make brass sound huge. Roaming works well between tables and tank bays. Keep cables tidy if you add a PA.
    • Pedestrianised streets: Completely mobile performances, no stage required. Coordinate timings with local organisers and consider permissions for amplification if you need it.

    What It Costs in Leeds

For most bookings in Leeds, expect typical brass band prices of £650 to £1,200. The exact figure depends on:

    • Line-up size: A compact roaming quartet sits at the lower end. A 6 to 7 piece with rhythm section, extra horns, and PA will be higher.
    • Set length and schedule: Two 45-minute sets is standard. Additional sets, early arrival, and late finishes add to the fee.
    • Travel and logistics: Central Leeds is straightforward. Rural barns or multi-site performances can change timings and cost.
    • PA and engineering: Roaming can be acoustic. For evening stage sets, most bands include a small PA. Larger rooms or outdoor shows may need upgrades.

Roaming or Staged: How to Decide

    • Choose roaming if you want energy spread throughout the space, light touch tech, and constant guest interaction. It shines for drinks receptions, markets, and summer fairs.
    • Choose a stage set if you want a show moment with all eyes forward. Perfect for first dances, awards hits, or the big post-dinner lift at a gala.

Many events go for both: roaming to start, then a stage show later. It adds shape to the day and keeps the momentum.

    Sound, Space, and Simple Logistics

    • Sound levels: Brass carries well. In hotels and barns, agree a comfortable level with your coordinator, especially if you mix background sets with dance sets.
    • Space and layout: For roaming, clear a loose path through guests. For stage sets, plan approximately 3 by 4 metres for a 5 piece, a little more if adding drums and extra horns.
    • Power: Roaming sets need little or none. Stage sets need access to mains power. Bands usually bring extension leads.
    • Weather plans: For outdoor markets and fairs, provide cover for the band and a dry area for cases. If rain is likely, move to a sheltered spot or switch to roaming under cover.
    • Access and parking: Breweries and barns can have tricky load-ins. Provide arrival instructions and a contact number. It saves time on the day.

Example Sets That Feel Very Leeds

    • Pop-brass party: Big sing-alongs from the last two decades, indie favourites with a Yorkshire wink, and a few classics that grandparents love. The aim is shoulder-to-shoulder choruses.
    • Festival warm-up: Groove-heavy numbers, call-and-response hooks, and brass takes on dance anthems. Great for outdoor crowds and student-led events.
    • Funky roaming: Tight horn riffs, percussion breaks, and short medleys that gather a crowd as the band moves. Ideal for breweries and market walkways.

What to Expect on the Day

    • Arrival and setup: For stage shows, bands usually arrive 90 minutes before guests. Roaming sets need less time, but allow a short warm-up.
    • Dress code: Most bands offer performance outfits to match the mood, from informal streetwear to smart evening wear.
    • Breaks: A short break between sets is standard. Plan background music through the PA if you want continuous sound.
    • Photos and permissions: Brass looks fantastic in pictures. If you’re on a street or campus, check any filming rules in advance.

    Budgeting Without the Headache

Here’s a simple approach that keeps everyone happy.

    • Start with your must-have moments: Ceremony exit, drinks reception, first dance, or the post-dinner lift. Book the set that matters most.
    • Add roaming or encore as budget allows: A short roaming pre-show or an encore medley gives you maximum impact for minimal extra time.
    • Keep travel tight: Leeds bands know the city and reduce travel costs and risk.
    • Confirm power, access, and weather cover: Small details save big money by avoiding last-minute kit changes or delays.
