Absolutely brilliant! We booked for our wedding.
Phil and the band (Four Foot Four) were great. The dances were easy to understand and Phil took us through step-by-step as we went too. Would definitely recommend!!

Booked for Wedding
Silver Street Ceilidh Band played at our wedding in July this year - luckily just after restrictions were lifted so we could dance. And boy did we dance!😄 The band created a fantastic atmosphere which meant that everybody got up and threw themselves into the spirit of the ceilidh. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves (and keep taking about the fun they had).Even the few who weren't dancing enjoyed laughing at everyone else making a fool of themselves! As both my husband and I are from Scotland, it was lovely to be able to be able to bring a taste of Scotland to the south of England for our wedding. The music and caller were fabulous and the band members were all professional and friendly. We couldn't have asked for more. Thank you for making our special day that extra bit special❤️

"We were very satisfied with the band , they were very obliging and happily fitted in with our schedule
Everyone at the party enjoyed the music"
We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies
We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.
Bristol loves a good tune. From harbourside sunsets to repurposed warehouses and artsy corners, the city is made for the warmth of fiddles, mandolins, and rich harmonies. If you’re planning a wedding, a creative industry party, an outdoor summer get-together, or even a lively street-food market, hiring a folk band is one of the simplest ways to give your event that unmistakable West-country lift. In this guide, we’ll show you how to pick the right act, what it costs, how to plan the flow, and how we make the whole thing easy.
Why a Folk Band Fits Bristol So Well
Bristol’s energy sits somewhere between coastal breeze and urban grit, which is exactly where folk music shines. It’s acoustic-friendly, flexible with volume, and instantly sociable. One minute the band can be gently underscoring conversation, the next they’re calling a ceilidh set and the whole room is up. That kind of range suits mixed-age crowds, open-plan venues, and spaces where you want buzz without blaring.
What “Folk Band” Actually Means Here
Folk in Bristol isn’t a museum piece. Acts blend traditional Celtic and English tunes with Americana, bluegrass, and modern crowd-pleasers. Expect:
Fiddle-led instrumentals that get toes tapping
Mandolin and guitar textures for a bright, percussive feel
Cajon or light percussion instead of a full drum kit for compact stages
Harmony vocals covering shanties, country-tinged ballads, and singalong indie
Line-ups typically range from a duo to a five-piece. Trios are the sweet spot for many Bristol venues: big enough to fill a room, small enough to slot into a corner of an arts centre or barn.
When a Folk Band Is the Perfect Choice
Weddings where you want heartfelt ceremony music, joyful drinks-reception tunes, and dancing later on
Creative industry parties that need cool-without-trying background sets before ramping into a ceilidh or stomping finale
Outdoor summer events on the Harbourside where acoustic-leaning sound carries beautifully without competing with the scenery
Street-food markets where an unplugged or lightly amplified band adds atmosphere without overwhelming traders or diners
If you’re unsure whether to go ceilidh, acoustic lounge, or full dance set, we’ll help you match the format to your schedule and space.

Curated suppliers
All Poptop’s suppliers are rigorously vetted and approved by our team of party experts, ensuring you book the very best.
Warehouses with height and character: folk instrumentation cuts through the natural reverb without harshness
Rustic barns in the surrounding countryside: fiddles, guitar, and cajon feel tailor-made for timber and twinkly lights
Arts centres and studio spaces: great for seated listening sets, intimate ceremonies, and curated showcases
If your venue has sound limiters, folk bands are pros at working within them. We’ll flag any decibel limits in advance and advise on mic choice and speaker placement to protect the vibe.
Sound Palette: The Bristol Folk Vibe
Leaning into West-country colour doesn’t mean cliché. Bands here are brilliant at giving traditional forms a modern edge:
Cajon grooves for a warm, danceable backbone
Mandolin sparkle to lift melodies in airy rooms
Fiddle leads for joyous instrumentals and ceilidh calls
Double bass or acoustic bass for depth without boom
Close-harmony vocals to turn a chorus into a crowd moment
If you love the idea of eco-chic unplugged, many bands can run fully acoustic for roaming sets outdoors, then plug in lightly for evening dancing.
Repertoire You Can Expect
Most Bristol folk bands carry three repertoires:
Traditional sets: jigs, reels, polkas, and waltzes for ceilidh or lively listening
Modern crowd-pleasers re-arranged in folk style: singalong favourites, soft rock, indie anthems with a roots twist
Americana and bluegrass colours: fiddle tunes, country standards, and porch-style harmonies
Tell us your must-plays and no-goes. We’ll share the band’s full song list and help you shape it around your moments.
Format Options
Drinks-reception duo or trio: light, melodic, sets of 45 minutes each
Evening dance band: two 60-minute or three 40-minute sets, with a ceilidh option (caller included)
Ceremony feature: aisle piece, signing music, and an uplifting exit tune
Market or outdoor roaming: acoustic sets moving between pockets of guests or stalls
Adding a caller for a ceilidh is a brilliant way to get strangers dancing together within five minutes. It’s inclusive, easy to learn, and guaranteed to generate big smiles.
What It Costs in Bristol
For Bristol bookings, typical fees range from £550 to £1,250 depending on date, set length, travel, and line-up size. As a rule of thumb:
Duos hover at the lower end
Trios and four-pieces sit mid-range
Bands with caller, double bass, or extended sets track to the upper end
Our pricing is instant and all-inclusive where possible, so you see the number you need straight away. No hidden extras, no cryptic add-ons.
What’s Usually Included
Professional PA sized for your room (or fully acoustic if preferred)
Setup and soundcheck before guests arrive
Background playlists between sets on request
Learning one special song if given enough notice
Public liability cover and PAT-tested equipment where amplification is used
If your venue has a house system, bands can often plug straight in. We’ll coordinate tech details so nothing is left to chance.
Planning Your Event Flow
Here’s a tried-and-tested Bristol running order that keeps things smooth and lively:
Ceremony or welcome: solo fiddle or acoustic duo for 20–30 minutes
Drinks reception: trio playing upbeat instrumentals and harmony-led tunes
Dinner or early evening: softer set with light percussion, keeping conversation clear
Peak moment: ceilidh set or modern folked-up bangers to pack the floor
Finale: big singalong number, then playlist to close
We’ll tailor this to your timings, catering windows, and any speeches or presentations.
Outdoor and Market Considerations
Bristol’s outdoor events are magic, but a few practicalities help:
Power: if you need amplification, we’ll arrange safe, weather-proof supply or bring battery-powered options
Shade and shelter: instruments and sound gear dislike drizzle and direct sun; a small canopy keeps the band comfortable and consistent
Volume balance: roaming acoustic works brilliantly for markets; for fixed stages, directional speakers avoid spillage into quiet zones
Permits: if you’re in a public space, check local permissions early; we can advise what typically applies

How to Brief Your Band for Bristol Venues
To get the best results, share a few details early:
Venue type and any sound limiters
Your timeline, including speeches and catering windows
Space for setup and whether quick changeovers are needed
Preferred balance between traditional tunes, modern covers, and ceilidh
Must-play songs and anything to avoid
Dress code and overall aesthetic (eco-chic unplugged, rustic barn elegance, or modern arts-centre minimal)
We’ll translate your preferences into a set plan the band can work with on the night.
Ceilidh or No Ceilidh?
If you have a mixed crowd, a ceilidh segment is a clever leveller. The caller explains every move, so experience isn’t required. Short blocks of 20–30 minutes keep energy high without exhausting the room. If you prefer a non-dance focus, bands can deliver a listening-led set, then pivot to upbeat folk-pop later.
Tech Notes That Save Headaches
Load-in access: tell us about lifts, stairs, or long carries so we bring the right trolleys and timings
Power: a pair of standard sockets near the performance area is usually enough for a trio
Lighting: a simple warm wash helps performances feel intentional; many bands can supply it
Sound limiters: we’ll set levels conservatively and use cajon over kit drums where needed
A Quick Bristol-Ready Checklist
Confirm your venue’s sound policy and any curfew
Choose line-up size based on room and guest count
Decide if you want a ceilidh segment with caller
Share must-plays and your overall vibe
Plan an outdoor fallback just in case
Lock timings so music syncs with food and speeches
