Since enlisting as a junior piper in 1977Gavin has had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (The Band that made the Original bagpipe recording Amazing Grace and Highland Cathedral) He has also served 18 years With his Majesty the Sultan of Oman in his Royal Guard in his Royal Guards 2nd Band Squadron, as Pipe Major (pipes and drums)
As his next assignment in 1993, at the Command of His Majesty the Sultan, he was tasked with forming the Royal Guards Mounted band 3rd Band Squadron. He formed the mounted from scratch, from young men who neither read nor wrote english, had no knowledge of music or Highland Bagpipes and were unable to ride horses!Within one year, the mounted pipe band paraded and played before H.M. Sultan Qaboos Bin Said and the nation, with fully balanced of 38 pipers and drums which included 2 drum horses.
