Perfect for our event. Paul found the perfect level of humour for our crowd - a tall ask considering it was a masonic mix of all ages. Well done! Would highly recommend for corporate gigs.

It's always difficult to know what entertainment to choose for a Corporate event. I wanted something that flowed at the the end of a workshop day and Doc Strange did not disappoint. Funny and entertaining from start to finish, my team really engaged. Looking to book again soon for another up and coming corporate event, with a slightly different audience. Highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic, simon was amazing from start to finish. We had a ticket only variety show and simon was brilliant, couldn't of asked for more, I'm sure he made a couple of Christmas presents with the audience members he brought on stage, brilliant.

After initially turning Louis down for an event only because we were looking for female acts he contacted us in his capacity as an agent and boy are we glad he did. Louis made a site visit not only to view the venue but to find out exactly what we need and he delivered. Loius organised our evening to perfection, guiding us all the way to make sure our first event was a success. Even on the night Louise attended to make sure everything went smoothly which was a god send as the speakers and mike we has purchased were not fit for purpose so in steps Louise with a spare and sets everything up for us. He's well connected and has booked us some high profile acts and we've already commisioned him to set up our next event and can't reccomend him enough. We will of course be booking him to do a stand up eveing of his own with us. Great guy, great service, professional and friendly :-)

We delivered next level parties for exceptional companies

We also did more than 40,000 birthday parties. Probably, including your neighbour’s recent big bash.

Hire a Comedian in Manchester: A Buyer’s Guide That Actually Helps

Thinking about booking a comedian in Manchester? Smart move. Comedy lands brilliantly here because the city already speaks fluent humour. From tech team socials to student balls, a well-matched act will lift the room, set a shared tone, and make the rest of the night flow. In this guide we’ll walk through how to choose the right style, what to expect on pricing, how to work the space, and how to brief your act so they shine in front of your guests. We’ll keep it practical, Manchester-savvy, and focused on outcomes.

Why Manchester is a great comedy city

This city loves quick wit, warmth, and a bit of back-and-forth. Manchester audiences reward confidence and honesty, with an ear for indie and alternative flavours. Comedians who can do clean but cheeky material with sharp crowd work tend to do especially well. You’ll find that a lightly spicy set keeps mixed groups on side. That balance is perfect for company parties, agency mixers, and student events where the age range and sensibilities vary.

What kind of event are you planning

Match the brief to the occasion. A few fast ideas.

  • Tech or company social
    • A 15 to 20 minute opener to energise the room before awards, show-and-tell, or a product milestone talk.
    • A seasoned host to keep a hackathon showcase or end-of-quarter celebration moving.
  • Agency party
    • A more playful set that leans into creative industry in-jokes without risking clients in the room.
    • A host who can stitch segments together, announce winners, and keep timing tight.
  • Student ball
    • Punchy material, strong crowd work, and clean language that respects the venue’s policies.
    • Great for pre-band entertainment or as the glue between student awards.
  • Creative industry mixer
    • Light compere with icebreakers, short audience interactions, and a few topical punches that nod to Manchester’s culture.
    • Ideal for a schedule with multiple short features, demonstrations, or pitches.

Styles that work in Manchester

We see four styles consistently succeed across mixed audiences.

  • Northern wit with warmth
    • Observational and down-to-earth, big on shared experiences and local quirks.
  • Indie or alternative flavour
    • Smart, slightly off-beat angles that feel right at home in creative circles, studios, and arts venues.

  • Quick crowd work
    • Engaging call-and-response with the front rows, improvised bits, and playful callbacks that bring the room together.
  • Mild spice for mixed groups
    • A little cheeky, never crass. Keeps corporate and student organisers comfortable while still getting proper laughs.
  • Tell us the crowd’s tolerance and we’ll help the act calibrate the dial from extra mild to medium.

Manchester spaces and how to use them

Comedians are portable. The trick is shaping the room.

    • Warehouse venues
      • Sound can bounce. Use a focused PA and tighten the seating footprint so laughter catches.
      • Put the stage or a simple riser near a wall to reduce echo. Lighting from slightly above eye line works best.
    • Studios and rehearsal rooms
      • Usually dry acoustics, which is great. Keep audience close and curved if possible to create energy.
      • A single spotlight and a soft backwash is all you need.
    • Arts centres
      • Often ideal. In-house tech teams will know the drill. Confirm mic type, monitors, and any brand messaging to be placed on stage.
    • University spaces
      • Lecture theatres can feel formal. Bring the first rows forward, switch off bright house lights, and add a handheld radio mic for mobility.

Small note on sound. A handheld radio mic is the standard. Lapel mics are fine for presenters but stand-ups prefer the control of a handheld. If your event is in a lively bar-style space, consider a second small speaker aimed at the back so punchlines land everywhere at once.

How long should the comedian perform

You don’t need an hour to get a big result. Consider these tried-and-true timings.

    • Opener set
      • 10 to 15 minutes before your main feature. Sets the tone without stealing the spotlight.
    • Feature set
      • 20 to 30 minutes for a solid, memorable burst. Best for parties and mixers.
    • Headline set
      • 40 to 50 minutes for a comedy-first evening or student showcase.
    • Breaks can help. Two 20 minute halves around a short interval work well if you want variety or a second act.
    • Hosting or compering
      • Light touch throughout the night, with mini-bits between segments. Keeps energy consistent and timings on track.

What does a comedian cost in Manchester

Plan a sensible budget and the rest becomes easy. Typical fees citywide range from £350 to £1,200. Factors that move the number.

    • Experience and profile
      • Early-career acts for shorter sets often start from the lower end.
      • Established club performers and seasoned corporate hosts sit mid to upper range.
    • Duration and role
      • A 15 minute set costs less than a 45 minute headline. Hosting the entire night commands more.
    • Day and timing
      • Thursday to Saturday evenings carry a premium. Late finishes may add a small uplift.
    • Travel and tech
      • Most Manchester bookings have minimal travel, which keeps costs lean. If your venue needs a portable PA, allow a small extra.

    As a quick steer.

    • Quick opener for an agency social: often £350 to £500.
    • Feature 25 minute set for a student ball or company party: commonly £500 to £800.
    • Experienced host guiding a full programme: typically £800 to £1,200.

How to brief your comedian so they nail it

A sharp brief lets the act customise the set without losing spontaneity.

    • Audience snapshot
      • Approximate age range, mix of departments or faculties, any VIPs, and whether partners or clients will attend.
    • House rules
      • Language level, topics to avoid, photography policy, and whether audience interaction is encouraged.
    • Event purpose
      • Celebration of a launch, end-of-year social, or a freshers’ welcome. Context guides tone.
    • Running order
      • Where the set lands relative to food, awards, or the band. Comedy works best when people can listen without plate clatter.
    • Local nods
      • A few light references the act can weave in. Think neighbourhoods or shared experiences students and teams recognise.
    • Practicalities
      • Stage location, mic type, lighting plan, and whether the act will introduce speakers or announce winners.

Share this a week ahead if possible. On the day, a five minute touch-base with the act to confirm the crowd vibe is gold.

Running order that keeps energy high

A tidy timeline protects the laughs.

    • Pre-show music at conversational level while guests arrive
    • Host welcome and quick housekeeping
    • Comedian opener or feature set
    • Short breather or bar top-up
    • Awards, team shout-outs, or student presentations
    • Optional second mini-set or hosting segments between items
    • DJ or band takes over

Avoid putting the comedian on while food is being served. If you must, pause service for the first ten minutes so the room locks on.

    Accessibility and inclusivity

Comedy is at its best when everyone can enjoy it. Aim for clear sightlines, accessible seating, and a mic level that covers the room without harshness. If you have guests with hearing aids, let us know so the PA can be tuned sensibly. Share any content sensitivities in advance and we’ll help the act stay on the right side of your brand and audience mix.

    Formats that suit Manchester events

    Try these simple structures.

    • Showcase format
      • Two shorter sets from the same act across the night with a midpoint announcement segment. Keeps variety high at mixers.
    • Host-led programme
      • A comedian comperes demos, pitches, or awards. Great for agencies and tech teams.
    • Comedy plus live music
      • A 20 minute set then a band or DJ. Perfect for student balls where you want a strong kick-off before dancing.
    • Working lunch or early evening slot
      • A clean 15 minute set and a handful of quick gags to open a company day or networking evening. Minimal disruption, maximum mood lift.
