This is for the consideration of the PopTop management, with regards to the customer feedback I have recently received on my Artist Profile. I would like to appeal for the comment to be removed from the website, as I strongly feel the nature of the feedback is rather unreasonable... Considering the circumstances under which my work at the event had to be carried out, I feel that the customer’s complaint is a little unsympathetic and inconsiderate of the work that I did contribute to the event, and of the over-all positive response I got from every single guest there.
It might be helpful for me to clarify what problems I encountered upon arrival, and how I have managed to deal with those problems and make the most of the given situation to ensure customer satisfaction:
I had arrived at the wedding reception with 30 minutes to spare, and after the ceremony I had approached the bride and groom – as I always do – to ask them about their preferences on how they would like me to work. I had asked them whether they would prefer I work from photographs with my iPad, or from a stationary position so that the guests could come up to me as they wish. I furthermore suggested that as people were quite busy chatting amongst themselves and having drinks, I could approach each guest individually and ask if they were interested in being drawn. At that point they had no objections at all, seemed very amicable, and very clearly said to ‘do whatever I thought was best’. I had resolved to go with the iPad option, as I usually do at wedding receptions, as 1) it wouldn’t disrupt the guests talking amongst one another as much as queuing up for a drawing would, and 2) I could produce more drawings, thus making sure everyone got a chance to be drawn. Seeing as the weather was quite sunny outside, I also informed the bride and groom that as I’m going to be working with my iPad, I would be working solely indoors due to lighting issues, to which they had no objections either.
As I began my work, I would also ask every guest individually whether THEY preferred to be drawn from a photograph, or whether they would prefer to sit in front of me and be drawn as such. The photograph option seemed to be the most popular, and so each individual guest or pair had allowed me to take their photograph and work from the captured image, so as to not disrupt their socialising. Moreover, there were a few people who did not want a caricature at all. I did not push – I simply moved on to the next person. I approach each guest in a friendly, and non-invasive manner, and in each case I ensured their preferences for drawing were met.
Walking amongst wedding guests while I work is something I do very often, and whilst sometimes it is the preferred method of interaction, it can also be quite difficult to approach them in such a way that wouldn’t get in the way of them talking in groups, having drinks, or taking their group photographs. Getting around all the guests, offering them drawings and taking their photographs had taken me about an hour with the above considerations I had tried to keep in mind; which meant I had 2 hours left to produce all the drawings, as I was contracted for a 3 hour slot.
