Where Do I Start When Planning a Wedding?

Hey, miss bride-to-be! Congratulations! I’m so happy to be on this wedding-planning journey with you. I totally get how fast the reality of wedding preparation kicks in after all the excitement of the proposal and celebrating your engagement, so I’m here to help you every step of the way.

Planning your own wedding doesn’t have to be scary. We’re going break it down into nice, manageable steps, so it’ll be a piece of (beautifully frosted!) cake.

The first, and most difficult step? Getting started! So where do we begin?

When you announce your engagement to the family, friends, colleagues, and everyone else, one of the first questions you’ll be asked is WHEN??

Set your season

Work out a target month or season when you want to get hitched. This will guide all your next steps, from finding your venue and officiant to booking your photographer, catering, and entertainment. Map out a rough timeline for when you need to have different things booked by, to keep you on track between now and your big day.

Work out your priorities

Chat with your partner and work out what you both most want from your big day. Do you dream of an intimate group in a remote and unique setting? A traditional church do with the big dress and classic decor? Or a huge party with all the glitz and glam of the red carpet? Make a list of the things that are most important to you both, so you don’t lose sight of them as you get fully into planning.

Set your budget

Once you know the boxes you both want to tick, you need to set your budget. Maybe you’ve already got a savings pot or parents who are happy to contribute to the costs, but it’s still important to know how much you need to set aside each month to cover the costs of your plans.  Use our free budget sheet and check out these tips and tricks for keeping your wedding costs down.

Get prepared

Kit yourself out with some notepads and folders to keep all your plans, budgets and paperwork organised, then hit the computer and set up your new wedding Pinterest board where you’ll collect snaps of all your favourite wedding details to inspire your day. We recommend getting a dedicated calendar or diary where you can map out all the things you need to arrange between now and your wedding. Use our free ultimate wedding checklist, so you won’t forget anything!

Here’s a schedule outline to get you started, that you can easily adapt to fit your timeline and priorities:

So what are you waiting for? You’ve had some time to talk and get ideas clear in your head, it’s time to really get this wedding planning ball rolling!
