The Earl of Powis, Edward Clive built the freestanding Ballroom at Walcot Hall in around 1800 and it has since seen over two centuries of magnificent occasions. The current owners have restored it to it’s former glory and it is now available to hire for many private events including wedding receptions, balls, parties, family reunions, opera, concerts and theatre. It is situated to the rear of Walcot Hall and can be approached either via the gardens or through a secluded stone-flagged courtyard.

Guests enter into the Anteroom / bar area which provides an intimate, cosy setting for around 30 seated guests or as a comfortable ‘break-out’ area during wedding celebrations. Here we have our bar as well as a piano, comfortable seating and an open fire. The perfect number for a wedding reception at Walcot Hall is 100-120 guests, although the Ballroom can accommodate up to 200 people in a more relaxed, buffet style or evening party.

Pheasantry Brewery

In 2012 we converted the original farm buildings here into a modern micro brewery. The brewery’s name is derived from the cottage next to the brewery which original maps show was a Pheasantry used for breeding and rearing game birds.

Our beers are brewed using traditional methods, from malted barley, hops, water and yeast. This area of Nottinghamshire was an important hop growing region for around 150 years from the early 18th century, when nearby Tuxford had its own Hop Fair. The farm sale details from 1943 show that the field down from the restaurant was called the Hopyard, and there are hops growing wild in the hedges there today. High Brecks farm was owned from the late 17th century by the Kirke family who lived in the hall in East Markham. There was a brew house within the original buildings here which was used for John Kirke’s personal use.


Malting barley is grown on the farm today, and new hops have been planted for demonstration purposes, so that visitors can see the brewing process from beginning to end, and taste the finished product too!

As guests arrive and are welcomed to the Ollerton Room, the bride is able to relax and prepare for the ceremony in comfort. This stylish space is complete with a vintage dressing table, chair, sofa and full length mirror. Conveniently situated next door to the Ollerton Room, this room is perfectly located and with space for the bride and all her bridesmaids, the bridal party can use this room to get ready in, or just for finishing touches. Available from 10am, The Bridal Boutique offers the perfect escape for the bride and family throughout the day.


WEDDING RECEPTION

Guests can enjoy a drink and canapes following the ceremony in either, or both, The Conservatory Room and The Oak Room. Fronted by the old A1 road, (now The Great North Road) Wentbridge House was formerly the home of the Leatham Family, whose daughter, Lorna, married Sir Alvary Gascoigne, one time British Ambassador to Russia.

The Leatham family are well remembered in nearby Pontefract by their association with Barclays Bank - the branch in Pontefract displays a plaque to that effect. The Leatham family’s generosity to the area is also marked by the Leatham Ward in Pontefract General Infirmary.


It was later the home of Colonel George Lyon, MC, MBE of Harkers Shipbuilders, Knottingley. During the Second World War, the house was used as the local headquarters of the British Army.


In 1955, Wentbridge House was purchased by Mr. Edward T. Robinson, Jeweller of Sunderland and Doncaster, with a view to its conversion into a hotel. In 1960, with the assistance of his wife and a professional team of staff, this ambition was achieved and an excellent reputation for the hotel commenced to become established. Following the death of Mr. Robinson in 1967, the business was continued by his widow, later to become Mrs. K. C. Dupuy.


Wentbridge House was sold to the Select Group of hotels in 1987 and subsequently purchased by the current owners, the Page family in 1993. It has been the intention, since this time, to maintain and build upon the superb reputation of Wentbridge House. The hotel now has 41 individually designed and decorated bedrooms, a 2 AA Rosette fine dining Restaurant, stylish and contemporary Brasserie and elegant function rooms for up to 130 guests.
