The Hoop Free House

The Hoop, High Street, Stock, Essex, CM4 9BD, Stock, Essex
Starting life as three weavers' cottages built circa 1460 The Hoop was converted to an Ale House approximately 450 years ago. There are several possible explanations why the ale house was named "The Hoop", the most common being the hoops used by a cooper in the manufacture of barrels.

Another being the raised hoops that would encircle a quart pot. In bygone times an overflowing tankard was said to be "cock-a-hoop" and the expression has since come to denote merry-making and drinking without stint. A tradition the locals still boast!

The present-day Hoop is notable for its handsome brick fireplaces. The bar is ornamented throughout by the building’s original timber framework, most of which formed part of warships lying in dock at Tilbury.

It was the practice in those days for the beams to be transported from the coast on wagons, after which the drivers would load their vehicles with newly-cut forest timber and take it back to Tilbury.

The Oakroom is available for private hire for all occasions such as weddings, parties, corporate events & funerals.

With seating for up to 40 covers or 50 for buffets, we are sure that the Oakroom will be the perfect venue for you.

Olive Grove

12 Best Ln, CT1 2JB, Canterbury, Kent
The Olive Grove is the proud achievement of two young childhood friends, who had a dream to open a Trattoria, and serve authentic Italian cuisines. They wanted to share the food they grew up on, and share it with a culture totally different from Italy.

Whilst travelling around Europe they visited many countries and it was purely by accident that they ended up in Canterbury.

In July 2000 they were travelling through England when their car broke down on the outskirts of Canterbury. They had no choice but to walk into the city and try to find help. As soon as they stepped within the city walls they fell in love. With the help of the money one of the boy’s parents had made from their olive business, they opened the restaurant you see before you today.

With the help of their families and friends back in Italy, they put together a menu that only uses the best ingredients. Mozzarella direct from Galbani Milano, Dessert imported from the experienced bakers of Sicily and Wine from the vineyards of Scardinia.

Today, even though faces may have changed, the heart of the Olive Grove is still firmly rooted with the same cooking traditions it grew up with.
