City Halls

87-101 Albion St,, G1 1NQ, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
After years of wear and tear, the venue closed in 2003 for an extensive £15 million refurbishment, re-opening to great acclaim in 2006. As a hub of creativity, a jam-packed programme of public workshops and classes has already benefited everyone from babies, toddlers and school groups to amateur and professional musicians.

Our resident orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, adds to the hive of activity, as we host its continuing series of events and performances. City Halls also provides a regular Glasgow performance base for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Ensemble.

The Grand Hall is a traditional style auditorium with raked seating and a balcony. It accommodates up to 1,036 people, although the largest audience was an enormous 3,500 back in 1843. The stage can accommodate an orchestra of over 90 and there are choir seats for 110. Many famous names have appeared here over the years, including Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Billy Connolly and Dr David Livingstone.

During the refurbishment, the windows of the venue, which had been blocked off for more than 50 years, were uncovered allowing light to flood into the auditorium.

This historic, Jacobite, Grade 1 Listed house, between Belsay and Wallington, was designed and built, in 1668, by Robert Trollope for Sir John Swinburne, 1st Baronet. Though enlarged about 1800, it still retains its charming Restoration baroque features and the extensive gardens enjoy wonderful views over the 18thC park and fully maintained kitchen garden and greenhouses.

The Swinburne family (now Browne-Swinburne) live in Capheaton Hall and run the estate, as they have done for 700 years. The luxury self-catering accommodation is in the West Wing and the family occupy the East Wing and centre of the house.

he backdrop of the beautiful Grade 1 listed Hall with its glorious architecture, and fabulous grounds, makes it the ideal location for a wedding.

Whether you intend to have a close intimate wedding with friends and family or require a more creative affair, you have the space and beautiful surroundings to do so. The Hall is provided exclusively to you for your wedding celebrations, with the spacious West wing accommodation a few steps across the lawn, sleeping up to eight wedding guests and the delightful landscaped gardens for you to enjoy.

The Hall decorated in rich colours, with high ceilings, detailed cornicing and walls adorned with splendid portraits, enables you and your guests to savor one of Britain’s hidden gems.

The main reception can comfortably seat 60 guests for a Civil ceremony, and the drawing rooms and central hall with its sweeping staircase are ideal for a more intimate ceremony.
