I trained as a classical violinist for 10 years before adopting the electric guitar where throughout 20 years I learned the genres of rock, jazz, country, folk, modern pop covers and original music. For the last 17 years I have focused on the violin, 12 of which I have spent as a member of the well known Doc Brown Trio with Wes Finch, transferring my guitar skills to my existing classical background and playing as many as 180 gigs annually throughout Britain.
My talent has been sought after by music producers and musicians alike, allowing me to add my personal touch to their productions. My contributions have been released on 24 albums over the last 10 years, plus on an additional 5 compilation albums.
Highlights for me have been playing Country and Western with the band “Honky Tonk Rose” with Horace Panter (The Specials). Also orchestral appearances on the X-Factor with Susan Boyle and at the Schools’ Prom at the Royal Albert Hall with Nigel Kennedy. Additionally, appearing with the late Sean (The Dubliners) and Robert Cannon at the Irish Heritage Festival.
Further highlights have been performances at venues such as The Barbican Centre, Birmingham Symphony Hall, and Stratford’s Royal Shakespeare Theatre for a BBC Radio 3 live broadcast performance celebrating 400 years of Shakespeare alongside performers such as Rufus Wainwright and Peter Knight (Steeleye Span) with his band Gigspanner.
My clients have described my playing as “uniquely uplifting”, with “a strong connection to the audience”. “Jools has an ability to thrive in challenging musical situations”, with “an enviable ability to work quickly and effectively within a very wide range of musical styles”. I am described as “a highly flexible and talented musician with a genuine concern for the end result” and “always prepared to take a risk with his music and challenge boundaries with fine delivery”.
