The Elephant has returned to its roots. The hotel was originally called The Elephant when it first opened in the late nineteenth century, but its name was changed to The Copper Inn in 1967.
After spending nearly 4 months giving it a complete refurbishment, it reopened just before Christmas last year – once more under its original name.
To the left shows an early advertisement for The Elephant Hotel at Pangbourne. The hotel has always formed a central meeting place within the village of Pangbourne. In fact what is now the hotel car-park used to be the stabling block for the hotel up until the turn of the 20th century!

Dorton House is only ever hired out on an exclusive use basis, below is a brief overview of the rooms available to you to use as you wish on your wedding day.
The Saloon:
This venue is licensed for Civil Wedding Ceremonies.
We can accommodate up to 120 guests for a wedding ceremony or evening party, or up to a maximum of 96 guests for a sit down Wedding Breakfast.
The Dining Room:
This venue is licensed for Civil Wedding Ceremonies
We can accommodate up to 90 guests for a wedding ceremony or evening party, or up to a maximum of 60 guests for a sit down Wedding Breakfast.
The Small Dining Room:
This venue is licensed for Civil Wedding Ceremonies
We can accommodate up to 30 guests for a wedding ceremony or evening party, or up to a maximum of 30 guests for a sit down Wedding Breakfast.
The Front Portico:
Weather permitting between the months of May and October it is possible to have an outdoor civil ceremony.
St John the Baptist Church:
In addition to civil ceremonies being held at Dorton House we are in a unique position to be able to offer couples the opportunity of a church ceremony. A mere 25 metres behind Dorton House we also have the beautiful St John the Baptist church hidden away. Steeple Court Manor

The original Manor on which the House is built was given to Ralph de Mortimer by William the Conqueror. The house as it stands today dates from Elizabethan times although some parts may be as early as 15th Century. The previous owner, Squire Jenkyns' wife was an Austin-Leigh, related to Jane Austin the author who used to stay here from time to time. Although the house is not used for weddings, it provides a splendid backdrop for pictures.
The Vineyard was planted 40 years ago by the present owner Jim Firth, who trained to be a vintner in the Alsace and the wine is estate grown and bottled by Jim and his son, Darren. The vineyard produces both Medium and Dry White Wine each year and we personalise the bottles for your special day with the names of the Bride and Groom and the date of the wedding.
Jim and Ann Firth provide an exclusive venue. You can relax in the knowledge that you and your wedding party are the only guests we have within the marquee and grounds during your special day. The marquee is also open for you the day before your wedding and the day after as well so that you can come and have a rehearsal for your ceremony or arrange any special little extras for the tables.
