Oakwell Hall

Nutter Ln, Birstall,, WF17 9LF, Batley, West Yorkshire
Oakwell Hall was built by John Batt in 1583 and is now run as a 'living museum' furnished as the Batt family home in the 1690s

Thanks to only minor alterations over the years and a fine collection of period furniture, the Hall offers visitors a real insight into a post English Civil War household. Charlotte Bronte was so inspired by the house during her visits in the 19th century that she featured it as "Fieldhead" in her classic novel Shirley.

The restored gardens are well worth a visit, and over 100 acres of Green Flag award winning country park include a visitor centre, gift shop, café, nature trail, picnic sites and a new playground designed for children of all abilities. The refurbished Countryside Information Centre opposite the play area is well worth a visit as well.

And if you can't actually get to us at the moment - take a peek at our wonderfully authentic 16th Century Manor House with our virtual tour.

Pass by the magnificent fire-place, and visit the Parlour Chamber with its scrumbled walls. Upstairs you can see the family Bible Box, and the beautiful quilt and bed hangings stitched by the Oakwell Broiderers. Imagine John Batt working on the estate's accounts in the small study, or imagine the hustle and bustle of the kitchen with its wonderful charcoal stove.

Royal Northern College Of Music

124 Oxford Rd,, M13 9RD, Manchester, Greater Manchester
The RNCM’s history dates back to the late 19th century and the establishment of the Royal Manchester College of Music (RMCM).

In 1858, Sir Charles Hallé founded the Hallé orchestra in Manchester, and by the early 1890s, had raised the idea of a music college in the city. Following an appeal for support, a building on Ducie Street was secured, Hallé was appointed Principal and Queen Victoria conferred the Royal title. The RMCM opened its doors to 80 students in 1893, rising to 117 by the end of the first year.

Less than four decades later, in 1920, the Northern School of Music was established (initially as a branch of the Matthay School of Music), and for many years the two institutions peacefully coexisted. In fact, it wasn’t until 1955 that NSM Principal, Hilda Collens, in recognising the importance of performance in training students, met with RMCM Principal, Frederic Cox, to raise the question of merging.

Discussions continued until September 1967 when a Joint Committee was formed to oversee plans to combine the two colleges. The RNCM was formed in 1972, moving to its purpose-built home on Oxford Road in 1973, where it continues to deliver world-class musical training.

Mitton Hall Country House Hotel

Mitton Rd,, BB7 9PQ, Clitheroe, Lancashire
Our big idea for bringing this magnificent 15th Century manor house back to life was to take it back to its roots and make it feel like a home again. Somewhere that looks and feels like it belongs to somebody. Stunning interior design and decoration perfectly complement the ancient architectural features to create a contemporary country house hotel. Both effortlessly beautiful and unashamedly romantic.

The ambience is quite unique. It is certainly luxurious and feels exclusive but the luxury and exclusivity are open to all.

Located right in the heart of the stunning Ribble Valley, the mansion has a host of unique features. A breathtaking oak-panelled Great Hall, gorgeous conservatory and idyllic riverfront terrace. This and much more gives Mitton Hall has an ambience that is both luxurious and welcoming.
