We have more than 6000 event and wedding suppliers on our roster. Some of them have grown from a few events per month to a fully booked schedule years ahead. We are very proud of our suppliers and would like to continue sharing their success stories. Meet our PRO member and leading event caricature artist Chris Pavlick – The Caricaturist.
How long have you been in the business and how did you start? Have we been drawing since a young age?
I’ve had a flair for drawing ever since I can remember. As a young boy, I often spent my time sketching, painting and designing my own comic books, which led me to study Art and Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts.
I then worked as a graphic designer in advertising for a long time, but it wasn’t until 2010 that I rekindled my passion for drawing cartoons, connecting with people and expressing comedy through illustration. I began to attend weddings, parties, and corporate events as a caricaturist – and having acquired contracts with a number of entertainment agencies, I found my way back into what I really love doing.
What are the main challenges for you in the event business?
It goes without saying that making clients happy is the most important, and the best part of working in the event business – but sometimes, clients can be indecisive and unspecific about what they want from the service. I like to discuss everything in as much depth as I can before the event to avoid surprises and disappointments – for the clients, as well as for myself.
By inviting clients to leave their feedback after an event, Poptop gives suppliers the chance for their reviews to speak for themselves, so everyone’s chances are pretty much equal – so what it really comes down to is doing what you do best, doing it the best you can, and people’s reviews will always reflect that.
What is your key to success at Poptop?
Positive reviews and feedback can go a really long way, and it’s the genuine comments from real people – more so than my own status or bio – that drive my success at Poptop. By inviting clients to leave their feedback after an event, Poptop gives suppliers the chance for their reviews to speak for themselves, so everyone’s chances are pretty much equal – so what it really comes down to is doing what you do best, doing it the best you can, and people’s reviews will always reflect that (read these tips on getting positive reviews from clients – Poptop).
Do you have any particularly memorable events that you have worked at? Any amazing guests you have drawn for?
I’ve been very lucky to have worked at some incredible venues, my favourite definitely being the spectacular Roman Baths. The atmosphere there was just amazing – and before the guests arrived, I got the once-in-a-lifetime chance of exploring it without its usual masses of tourists.
What’s your least favorite part of working in the events industry?
The events industry is a much different working pattern than a standard 9-5 job. Working days and hours vary a lot, so it can be difficult to make plans, but working mostly in the evenings and on the weekends means I can spend the rest of the time working on my art projects – and not many jobs can give you that!
