We asked Matei a few questions on his time during quarantine, any tips he has and how he has managed to be so successful during this time.

How have you adapted your services since the outbreak of COVID-19?

As lockdown began on the 23rd of March, I have had all my private bookings canceled/postponed along with my cafe being closed until further notice. This left me in a terrible situation with very little income.

It’s great to see clients are still willing to have food delivered, and celebrate special moments at home. Offering the delivery service allows me to still practice what I love doing, and make an income to survive during the difficult time

After a couple of weeks of understanding, and judging the situation, I believed there was a chance for me to start a delivery service. This is why I started offering sunday lunches and afternoon tea delivery service. The response and feedback was and the demand for this has been amazing and has given me a positive vibe to continue. Overall, so far I have delivered around 70 afternoon teas and sunday lunches to clients around Newcastle. It’s great to see clients are still willing to have food delivered, and celebrate special moments at home. Offering the delivery service allows me to still practice what I love doing, and make an income to survive during the difficult time.

How have you managed to get good quality ingredients and how is this food being presented to your clients?

I am working very closely with my suppliers and I have adapted the menus based on what ingredients I can get. I am very passionate about my food, taste and presentation and this still continues when it is being offered as a delivery service. I am trying to offer a posh take away service, so people can enjoy restaurant quality food in their home. The food is presented in re-heatable containers and I am aware of the social distancing rule. Once the food is dropped at the client’s doorstep, I will step 2 meters away and have a chat with the client.

How do you believe the events industry will change after quarantine?

I believe the events industry will go from 0 to 100 very quickly. I have already had a booking on Poptop for a hen party next year. Already, we are starting to see clients curious about planning their events. It definitely will be a tough few weeks/months ahead but it’s best to be prepared when a lot of clients are coming in again. 2021 will be the most important year for everyone’s business to make sure we can cover the losses made in 2020.

If I use this time wisely now to improve my brand and my services, I believe this will improve my chances of getting more bookings when the market picks up

Any advice/tips for fellow suppliers on how you are using this time to your advantage?

It is a tough time for the catering sector and events industry overall. It is important to see what funding options are available for you. I have a friend who runs a pub in the countryside and he was given £25,000 from the government. It will be difficult for restaurants and private chefs but this is an example of how the government’s funding can certainly help.

I am also using this time to look over my Poptop profile, improve my website and promote my presence on social media. If I use this time wisely now to improve my brand and my services, I believe this will improve my chances of getting more bookings when the market picks up. Also, I simply need to keep active and keep working to give me strength.

This is truly an inspiring story of how to adapt to the current market and prepare for the future. We advise all our suppliers to follow these tips and update your Poptop profile to the best it can be. This includes updating ALL your Instant Quote packages:

  1. Add your online or delivery services packages – Update these packages to adapt to the current market. This will help you receive bookings during this quiet time.
  2. Add all your offline packages – Once the market returns it is crucial to have all your regular packages created. Suppliers with no Instant Quote packages, will not be shown to these potential clients. Having Instant Quote packages will showcase your services to more clients and put you at the top of the catalogue.
